Speaking during Labour Day celebrations in Livingstone, Minister of Tourism and Arts Jean Kapata said government will continue to focus on policies, strategies that will significantly contribute to realization of employment creation, human development and broad-based pro-poor growth.
“Consequently over 7,000 formal jobs were created in various sectors of the economy in 2015,” she said.
Ms Kapata said that as a member of the United Nations (UN) family, Zambia is committed to ensuring that the Sustainable Development Goals set by the United Nations are fully realized.
“In particular, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal No. 8 places emphasis on decent work and economic growth. Decent work means equal access to employment for every youth, women and men,” said the Minister.
Meanwhile Ms Kapata has urged artistes to continue lifting the Zambian flag high.
Speaking when she addressed the Fourth Edition of the just-ended Zambia Music Awards ceremony at Lusaka’s Radissons’ Blu Hotel, Ms Kapata said the contribution of arts to the health and livelihood of communities cannot be over-emphasized.
She noted the financial contribution that arts institutions make in the communities.
“It is quite evident that the relations between business and the arts offer real change to achieve success not only for each other, but also to generate income for the hotels, restaurants and countless other businesses,” said Kapata.
The Minister noted that currently the arts and culture sector employs about 95,000 people between the ages of 19 and 35.
“Zambia presents an opportunity for future development of arts and culture, and provides a huge and attractive potential for investment,” she said.
Ms Kapata said support from partners like Zambia Breweries helps government to promote arts and culture to levels capable of contributing to the country’s GDP.
“To this end we are not answering the: ‘What can the economy do for our arts?’ but rather, ‘What can the arts do for our economy’,” she said.
This is according to a statement issued to ZANIS in Lusaka today by Ministry of Tourism and Arts Public Relations Officer Sakabilo Kalembwe.

It it can be very INTERESTING to know in WHICH sector of the economy 7,000 jobs were CREATED by the Government.
Any clarification please?
People are usually not paid in over 3 months while she and her entourage stuff themselves. She is another individual we need to see qualifications in this sector. What jobs has she create if not to show PF created jobs when they won’t pay employees. We recently read she is going to slaughter 24 lions. Yes when she runs out of ideas and cannot copy from what was practiced in the 80’s, she resorts to guns. Because it is simple and does not require an educated mind to use real sustainable practices quoted from the same (MDG’s), Millennium Development Goals she is talking about. Another PF dunderhead who has no clue in this field. Time to go Wig Lady!
