THERE is a possibility that the assets and liabilities declared by the UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema to the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) could have been undervalued, former Katuba UPND Member of Parliament Jonas Shakafuswa has said.
And Kabushi Patriotic Front (PF) aspiring candidate Bowman Lusambo has challenged Mr Hichilema to give a statistical tabulation of his assets and liabilities.
He wondered why Mr Hichilema avoided telling the nation how many houses, companies, cars and farms he owned.
Mr Lusambo said the assets and liabilities declared by Mr Hichilema did not appear to be a true reflection of his net assets and liabilities.
Mr Hichilema declared a total of K73 million as value of his assets and liabilities while during the 2015 presidential by-election he declared a total of K63.9 million.
But Mr Shakafuswa, who until recently was UPND Member of Parliament for Katuba constituency, said the UPND leader was “a very rich man”.
Mr Hichilema revealed that he was worth K73.16 million but the UPND leader did not give a statistical tabulation of his assets and liabilities.
And Mr Lusambo claimed Mr Hichilema allegedly lied when he declared K73 million worth of assets before the commission, adding that he still had a lot of assets released from privatization.
He said Mr Hichilema could have avoided declaring all his assets and liabilities because it was going to expose how rich he was at the expense of poor Zambians.
He said Zambians, especially on the Copperbelt, were still waiting for an explanation of how he sold some of the mines and what was his share from the deals.
Mr Lusambo alleged Zambians were ‘‘not foolish but alive’’ to the fact that Mr Hichilema was behind privatization of the mines on the Copperbelt.
He said one of his priorities if elected MP for Kabushi was to move a motion to make Mr Hichilema account for the mines which he sold especially in Luanshya.
He said Mr Hichilema should also explain how he found himself chairman of Sun Hotel in Livingstone.
