International defender Joseph Musonda says Zambia should win the 2016 Cosafa Castle Cup as consolation for failing to qualify for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations.
Chipolopolo enters the Cosafa Cup fray on Sunday with a quarter-final match against Swaziland.
In an interview in Kitwe, Musonda said winning the Cosafa Cup may help to raise the spirits of disappointed Zambian fans.
The Nkana defender is also calling on fans to rally behind the locally based Chipolopolo squad that is competing at the Cosafa Cup.
“The team must prepare adequately and try to win the Cosafa Cup. I know the nation is hungry for success,” Musonda said.
“It is very sad that we failed to qualify for the Africa Cup and I know the nation is not happy but we need to encourage the national team,” Musonda said.
“We need to support and encourage the team. Most of the players in the team are young so they may be demoralised if fans point fingers at them or boo them,” he said.
Musonda is not part of the national team that is in Namibia for the Cosafa Cup.
The former Golden Arrows defender has not played for Chipolopolo for some time now.
