Zesco United snatched a late but critical point away at ASEC Mimosa in Cote d’Ivoire on Wednesday to keep alive their 2016 CAF Champions League semifinal hopes.

Zesco rallied to draw 1-1 in Abidjan to remain second and pick up their first away point in Group A after losing 2-0 in Morocco against leaders Wydad Casablanca on June 29 in Rabat.

ASEC put Zesco under pressure in the opening ten minutes of of the match but goalkeeper Jacob Banda made some critical saves to ensure the hosts did not avenge the 3-1 loss they suffered in Ndola on July 16.

However, Banda was punished in the 75th minute when Nabi Kone beat the on-rushing Zesco goalkeeper to the ball to open scores off a Yannick Zakri free kick.

But AESC’s lead lasted just four minutes when Jackson Mwanza fired in the equalizer in the midst of a scrum in the box after AESC defenders failed to deal with Cletus Chama’s free kick.

Zesco stay second on 7 points, three more than ASEC after four games played heading into the penultimate round of matches in August.

Leaders Wydad (7 points) and bottom placed Al Ahly (1 point) meet in a late kickoff on Wednesday in Morocco to decided the points status in Group A after round four.

Zesco must now draw away at Al Ahly on August 12 and hope Wydad beat ASEC two days later in Rabat to ensure they become the first Zambian club to reach the CAF Champions League semifinals.
