LAZ told to be objective

Share

LAZTHE Zambia Republican Party (ZRP) has challenged the Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) to be objective when commenting on national matters.

ZRP president Wright Musoma said LAZ was being biased when they called for the lifting of the suspension of licences for Muvi TV, Komboni Radio and Radio Itezhi-Tezhi by the Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) and attacked the Times of Zambia for running an article on the violence in Namwala District.

“Of late, we have had organisations that are supposed to be independent but they are partisan and we can tell that this organisation supports this party, but it’s so unprofessional for LAZ to be one-sided when dealing with national issues,” Mr Musoma said.

Mr Musoma said this in an interview yesterday when he made comments on LAZ’s Press briefing held on Thursday.

At the briefing, LAZ honorary secretary Sashi Kateka said the IBA should lift the suspension of licences for the three media houses and that the public media should not alarm the nation with biased reporting on the violence in Namwala.

Mr Musoma said the media was supposed to inform the public on issues based on the truth but the problem with Muvi TV, Komboni Radio and Radio Itezhi-Tezhi was that they were reporting based on lies which could incite the nation.
He said there was no problem with the public media informing people about the incidences of violence in Namwala District because that was what had happened.

Mr Musoma said that lawyers should be careful when choosing leaders in LAZ because Zambia needed leaders who were professional when dealing with national matters.

“We are not saying that they should not be commenting on national issues but all we are saying is for LAZ to be professional when handling national matters and be balanced.

“We are urging lawyers in the country to look at people who are not partisan when electing leaders,” Mr Musoma said.

He said he was aware that some leaders in LAZ did things in order to protect their relations and personal interests.

  1. Timely advice. When is ICC inviting HH and GBM? Anyone with information. we want to go and give solidarity match some of us

    • What you don’t realise is that the international community already have evidence against the PF. This may turnout like Chiluba v. Patel and Others, where in an attempt to sue the appellant exposed himself to several revelations about his conduct while in office.

    • Moreover, in such cases for someone to get an indictment there has to be conclusive evidence that the purported atrocities where ordered by the accused person. It is like saying that when a PF cadre hacks an opposition supporter with a panga then the instructions are coming from EL. One would have to provide collaborative evidence of such instructions having been either issued by EL.

  2. The Namwala is a true issue that has happened why does LAZ want ZNBC to hide it ? Muvi TV n others were reporting on lies which were not verified. LAZ is political I even wonder their joining into the case because they will be pulling towards UPND . Judges by themselves are complete we don’t need partisan LAZ to give them direction , at the end of day it’s LAZ that will have decided the presidency not the people of Zambia

  3. Clearly this guy doesn’t know that there is a legal dimension to this issue, and LAZ is the statutory body mandated by law to provide legal advice on such perceived breaches of the IBA Act.

  4. Once parliament starts seating we have to petition that LAZ ceases to be an institution through parliament act because its interest is of personal agendas and not national. LAZ is like a church. The same way any pastor/priest/reverend should be careful in commenting on political issues from the pulpit due to the composition of every congregation so is LAZ leaders. LAZ membership cuts across partisan, tribal and business interests. Therefore a leader of LAZ should be someone who can contain themselves properly regardless of their personal interest. For Sashi Nchito Kateka to come out that they want to join the petion, overlook the inciting from muvi tv its quiet surprising. And why did they give her a title of honourary secretary where is the LAZ president?

  5. What I see is a communication gap between the private media houses and statutory bodies, such as IBA. Media Ethics must guide Media Policy. These poor journalists need capacitation through Continuous Education. Punitive sanctions are inadequate.

  6. God came to me last night and said that we need to get rid of evil tonga if we want peace. Let us come together and kill tongas. Please add me on fayce book my name is James matches.

    Proud easterner

    • his is a fake account for James Matches and whoever is masquerading as James Matches shall soon be exposed. Please do not Pay attention to this fake account.

    • You don’t have manners, how can you kill somebody maybe you think Tonga’s are alone we can organise for barose and make you easterners and northerners stop coming to our land.you can suffer my dear stop thinking rubbish in your ka small computer

  7. My sister was beaten in Namwala and the case is there. Who is Laz, with hidden agendas? Laz’s interest should be investigated because they may be in the cartel. Their motive joining the Court should be taken with a lot of questions. Do not trust them. Njala has made a lot of lawyers to be involved in an un questionable dealings. People should also be careful because some of these radio stations are funded to bring confusions in countries. as was the case in Rwanda.

  8. Who is THE Zambia Republican Party (ZRP)? Did they even contest the elections…some parties are just good at making noise.

    • Yes, anyone can speak even in the bar everyone speaks politics but you wont see journalists writing that in their papers that Mr Whiteson Phiri on table No. 3 at Times Cafe said so and so…

  9. *The Law Association of Zambia- A captured Institution by the Cartel.*

*LAZ President, Linda Kasonde worked at MNB(now Nchito and Nchito)a law firm owned by brothers Nchima and Mutembo Nchito.

*Vice president of LAZ, Eddie Mwitwa is a partner to former Attorney General Musa Mwenye popularly known as Cartels’ lawyer and now one of Hakainde Hichilema’s lawyers in the Presidential Petition against President Edgar Lungu.

*Sashi Nchito Kateka, the LAZ Honorary Secretary is young sister to the Nchitos.

And you ask why LAZ is biased??

Lawyers wake up, Zambians wake up. This is a hijacked and captured institution by the Cartel fighting President Edgar Lungu.

    • Thanks for the information which is explaining friends of the Court agenda. Mrs Kateka should have revealed are true identity in the article that she is young sister to the Nchitos rather than fooling the nation that she was representing LAZ. LAZ has lost its credibility because of few individuals promoting their personal agenda & this institution should not be used this way.

  10. I tend to differ with Dominion, once parliament starts sitting the first item should rather be the cancellation of citizens paying TV levy or we the citizens should all plan what action to take if they refuse

  11. LAZ is a disgraced institution & the leadership has no shame. Whatever is in interest of ordinary Zambians that GRZ is pushing LAZ objects for sectorial elitist reasons. LAZ & UPND vehemently objected to Constitution then today claims ‘we’re on side of the law’. LAZ started by objecting to referendum on BoR & then @ last minute changed its mind to support but this was too late. These are just 2 monumental historical constitutional developments in Country where LAZ has contributed ZERO due to narrow interests. What a bunch of lost kids obsessed with getting rich & famous quickly!

  12. Namwala issue. Why is there no video clip on Znbc news to show the findings by the Jean Kapata entourage. We want to see the victims of Namwala violence being interviewed so that we can recognize them if really are Namwala residents as the issue seem to be a fiction. All those alleging this, should not tell us that no civil servants were among the victims. Those alleged to have bn beaten, went or were taken to hospital, so I would like to hear conformation by hospital staff. This will be the best proof from Kapata J. Or else, the issue seem to be fake.

    • It takes time to make a movie if you don’t have Nollywood skill set. Give them another couple of days.

  13. Just look at their current president, Linda Kasonde, do some investigation on who she really is and you would want her and LAZ to be near the Concourt.
It’s a shame that noble institutions like like have been turned in chikwakwa as we used to say at UNZA.
I seriously think there is need for independent institution of think tank men and women who should be monitoring and evaluating these institutions and other undertakings in like projects in our country. Let’s learn from the US. If you are found wanting as an individual, you can’t serve on certain positions, maybe most of don’t know why these guys in UK and US resign on their own when they know that their conduct goes against certain norms.
Equally, the best thing HH can do now is to concede defeat, congratulate HE ECL and step…

  14. Sorry meant
Just look at their current president, Linda Kasonde, do some investigation on who she really is and WOULDN’T want her and LAZ to be near the ConCourt on the no effect petition by the Under 5.

  15. Unfortunately in Zambia all professions have been infiltrated by crooked individuals. Listen to their discussions in clubs and you’ll wonder whether for them it’s a calling or it’s because they had no option to what they are now.

  16. Mr musoma stop commenting using ZRP which is none existing and mind you Zambia is a multi party state where citizens and organizations are free. You are PF member hiding and you see to be lost! How can PF government close muvi TV without deliberating on the issue, warning or take the station to court to seek justice,??for your betterment the procuder is first the IBA (which has never been independent and is a ghost organization) could have sent a written warning, then send a call out, then charge the station stating clearly the offence committed giving time for them to respond! But NOT just wake up with charges have board meeting and mbuuh ! Station is closed.mr do you know why the referendum was done???how can Zambia dream of nice fancy bill of rights when simple rights of information are…

  17. Its sad to see how shallow minded many people making comments are and it reflects on serious lack of information on the functions of LAZ.many of you zambians are not only docile but also ignorant, policatically bankrupt, unpatriotic and uncivilized. How can you lots see throughout the evils of PF and you now blaming LAZ! Shame on you paid chaps when majority Zambians are wallowing in poverty!! You want to hood wink us that the thieves and riggersvof election who went to monopolize ZNBC ,close post/muvi TV these barbaric people to be Holly?? No ..no they are crooked !they jail innocent people like mwalileta when ghosts like k.Zulu are free in Zambia.. Shame on you unchristian lots and stop pretending we hate PF they are thugs!
