Govt to set up eye care health posts

Government says it is committed to ending blindness and visual impairment in Zambia by establishing eye care health posts across the country.

ZANIS reports that Minister of Health Chitalu Chilufya said government has put up measures to combat blindness in Zambia by establishing corneal transplant surgeries such as the one being constructed at Kitwe central Hospital and Lusaka eye Hospital.

Speaking during the commemoration of the World Sight Day in Lusaka, Dr. Chilufya said government currently has over 60 Districts Health posts offering eye health care services across the country.

The Minister said the ministry of health is now treating over 150,000 Zambians with visual impairment annually since the launch of vision 2020 in 2004.

Dr. Chilufya expressed happiness that referrals for eye health care have reduced from 90 percent to 20 percent in most provinces in Zambia owing to the provision of eye health posts.

He further expressed gratitude to cooperating partners that are helping in making available technologically advanced eye health care delivery.
