EU donates two vehicles to Ministry of Mines

Share

The Mineral Production Monitoring Project has handed over to the Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development two Isuzu KB300 vehicles provided by the European Union to help with outreach programs to the mines.

Speaking at the handover ceremony at new government complex in Lusaka, head of infrastructure at the European Union in Zambia Mr Adam Grodzicki said the vehicles will be used to directly support the Ministry of Mines as it works to improve Mineral Production Monitoring here in the country.

“The vehicles will enable travel to various mine sites in Zambia for inspections, audits and training sessions. With these vehicles the Ministry of Mines will fully execute its mandate as the regulator of the mining industry. It will allow the Ministry to be on-site as it works with the mines to ensure their processes, procedures and systems are correct and accurate.”

Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development Permanent Secretary Mr Paul Chanda commended the European Union’s support of the Zambian government’s efforts to build strength and sustainability in mineral production monitoring.

“I am encouraged by the prospect of enhancing our ability to travel directly to our mining partners, so that cooperation with the mines can be nurtured and sustained.”

Mr Grodzicki says the European Union has already actively supported the development of a digital reporting system for the mines and has funded new laboratory equipment for the Ministry so that better analyses can be done on materials produced and exported by the mining companies.

Riots have broken out in Choma town following the raid of UPND president Hakainde Hichilema’s residence last night by the police.

The Lusaka, Livingstone road has been blocked. Vehicles are being prevented from passing through the town. Armed Police officers are trying to calm the situation and are firing teargas.

    • THAT’S WHAT I SAID IN ANOTHER ISSUE THAT, RIOTS WILL BE CONFINED TO SOUTHERN PROVINCE. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT THE GOVERNMENT SERIOUSLY DEVELOP TOURISM INFRASTRUCTURE IN THE NORTHERN PARTS OF THE COUNTRY SO THAT TOURISM IS NOT AFFECTED BY THE TRIBAL NONSENSE THAT GOES ON IN THE SOUTHERN PROVINCE. MOST OF THESE CHAPS HAVE COMPLETELY FAILED TO ACCEPT OTHER TRIBES IN ZAMBIA. MPULUNGU, NSUMBU, NCHELENGE, BANGWEULU WETLANDS ARE JUST SOME OF THE MANY TOURISTICALLY POTENTIAL PLACES. INFRASTRUCTURE NEEDED IN THESE AREAS ARE GOOD ROADS, AGRICULTURE AND MODERNISATION, ETC.

  3. Instead of rebuking Lungu for his thugary you are wasting money on handouts. These vehicles might soon be used for charcol or lifts by PF thugs

  4. My word!

The EU should know how to best use their resources. Why does the Ministry of Mines need vehicles or anything donated? The Ministry of Mines should be able to buy the vehicles that they need if they collected all the taxes due from mining firms.

This is definitely one silly thing that has happened.

Shame on Zambia and the EU!

    • This to me sound like a bribe by the EU. When will our industries be run free from the former colonial masters? look at those stupidly educated mine administrators, they look like having no clue of what these donations mean to us. Some of these donations are just insults to our so called economic independence. Lets be careful with some of these hand outs.

    • The EU is protecting its assets, The mines. In case you didn’t know, the EU is there to make sure that all the cheap raw material goes to Europe for their use. They pretend to care about politics when in fact all they care about business. Those raw materials create a lot of jobs in Europe. Jobs that could have been for Zambians.

  5. EU has investments in mines…the steal in one hand via their transfer pricing rules and give you chump change in the other!!

  6. JAY JAY, ON THIS ONE I AGREE WITH YOU. WE CAN NOT CONTINUE WATCHING THE FORMER MASTERS TO BRIBE US WITH CHEAP DONATIONS AND STEAL FROM US WITH THE OTHER HAND. THIS IS AN ACCEPTABLE.

    • @Nzelu do your research you will find that KCM or Mopani at one time got a loan from EU…these guys have investments and vested interest in some of our mines.

  7. So who will bear the cost of maintaining these fuel guzzling vehicles?
Even the EU are falling into this terrible nonsense of Luxury Suvs! What is wrong with these people? This is root cause of such nonsense- those Luxury Suvs once their warranty expires will be an added cost on maintenance which our poor ministries would be better off without! Why feeding on the vanity of these Top Govt officials??? So Sad! Why couldn’t they just donate 2 simple corrollas and 2 motor cycles- easier to maintain and the motor cycles would enable the user to reach even the most remote areas!
