UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema
Incarcerated opposition United Party for National Development (UPND)leader Hakainde Hichilema says he is in detention along with five others not because they have committed a crime but because they believe in democracy.
In a message posted on his official Facebook page, Mr Hichilema who has now spent over a month in police custody on treason charges has since thanked Zambians for their prayers and support.
“Fellow countrymen and women. Thank you very much for the unrelenting support you have continued providing to us as we remain in custody. Your prayers are well noted and we are very grateful,” Mr Hichilema said.
He added, “We are detained not because we have committed a crime, but because we are democrats. We believe in democracy. We believe in Zambia and we believe in Zambians.”
“This country needs leadership, the potential in this country is immense, what we need is to harness that potential to make Zambia a great country. This is why we are in court, fighting for what rightfully belongs to us, and we shall continue fighting and justice is not only done but seen to be done. We are not anywhere near unlawful means, we believe in the law and we shall abide by the law all this time,” Mr Hichilema said.
“This is our little encouragement to our members, do not worry about us inside here, we are well. We shall survive this minor setback. This will not kill our spirit, they may inflict physical pain and humiliation, but that will do nothing to our spirit. We shall end this way “no one can stop an idea, time has come.” To our supporters read this; Romans 8:31. God Bless the country.”

Indeed a democrat according to HH doesn’t recognizing a sitting president. A democrat goes into a drag race with a presidential motorcade and allows its following to insult a sitting head of state. A democrat attends traditional ceremonies but walks out of the program when he believes its the turn of the head of state to speak because his democracy does not recognize authority. If the courts solved the petition issue in favor or against what we are witnessing in Zambia couldnt have happened.The constitution court in Zambia is the root cause of all this. I remember The late Satas priority was to sort out the judges etc but was unsuccessful and these problems will go on because theres no transparency and are not independent

Well said HH. From Magistrate Greenwell Mulumani’s Landmark Judgment on the “Insult” it is very clear that HH and others did not commit Treason at all. All State Witnesses proved that the Treason Charges were trumped up and are politically motivated. There is no basis for Treason. This a clear persecution of HH and his workers. Lungu’s strategy to imprison the Election Petitioners with the hope that they will withdraw their Petition from the Court and then Recognize Lungu as Legitimate President will not work. Petitioners cannot be expected to recognize illegality. Lungu should release HH unconditionally and allow the Petition to be heard in Court. That is the only to way to re-unite, reconcile and heal the Zambian Nation.

The statement above: “We have not committed any crime,” by HH is a plea of “NOT GUILTY.” It doesn’t mean he must not be charged and prosecuted. The courts mandate that all are “innocent until proven guilty”. It’s the duty of the prosecution to prove otherwise – to prove that HH is indeed guilty. Have they? Can they? Are they not liars and peddlers of distortions? Having arrested HH, what have they done to prove their case? Have they not made a mockery of Justice? Are they not a joke, in every sense of that word? What else have they done besides defecating on his premises? Is that justice?
I hear they even stole his money! What a shame.
Come on guys those of you who think there’s democracy in UPND, think again. I’m PF or UPND supporter but honestly HH has been at the helm since 2006 no election as per the party constitution. This is where we fail, it’s not about grassroots being happy with the leadership. The biggest issue I have is if HH were to win in 2021, Zambia will be in chaos as I think he will harbour that anger until he gets back at Lungu. We as Zambians ought to challenges these guys, be it Lungu, HH, Milupi, Chipimo, etc. This is our motherland and we are one people. HH however, has not committed treason the prosecutions’ case is weak.
The State Witnesses proved that there is no evidence that HH and his workers committed Treason at all. The State has decided to withdraw the Motorcade charge simply becoz it has no evidence that HH has a case to answer. The Treason Charge and other charges are all trumped up and in any case HH Petitioned the stolen Election in Court. The Prosecutors had very poor State Witnesses and failed to prove that HH and his workers committed Treason or any of the crimes allegedely committed. Lungu should just release HH unconditionally and allow the Petition to be heard in Court.
It is abundantly clear that you (brother HH and other five brothers) did not commit any criminal offence(s) or a misdemeanour(s). We will not bother about persons who deliberately fail short of analysing relevant facts with open eyes. Currently, there are certain persons who have elected to reconcile with their own restricted thinking and, they must remain within such a distorted position, because they are determined to drown. Lies cannot be construed as excellent qualities of a just leader. You (brother HH) has a vision and a mission to develop Zambia for all citizens and all those who live in it, as opposed to humiliating and persecuting opponents. Long live brother HH and UPND.
