The death toll from the recent Mpulungu road traffic accident has risen to 20.

This follows the demise of two female patients, who were admitted to the Intensive Care Unit at Kasama General Hospital and another one from Mbala General Hospital.

Northern Province Permanent Secretary Jobbicks Kalumba has confirmed the development to ZANIS in Kasama today.

Dr. Kalumba said the deceased died of severe body injuries sustained from the road accident.

He said the remains of those who died from Kasama General Hospital will be transported to Senga District for burial once medical personnel conduct postmortems.

And Dr. Kalumba revealed that other accident victims still admitted to Mbala General Hospital are responding well to treatment and are out of danger.

Dr. Kalumba further said the rest of the survivors who were admitted to Mpulungu District Hospital have all been discharged.
Recently, 17 people died on the spot in the fatal road traffic accident in Mpulungu after the light-truck registration number ACK 587 they were in lost control and overturned along the Mbala-Mpulungu Road.

The victims were part of the over 60 catholic church members from Mambwe Mission who were heading to Mpulungu from Senga District for a church gathering when they met their fate.

The deceased were put to rest at a common burial site near Mambwe Catholic Mission in Senga District last Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the driver of the fateful truck, Light Silwamba, 28, is in police custody awaiting court appearance for causing death by dangerous driving.
