A chinese Chicken Farmer Selling Chickens at the market

The Poultry Association of Zambia (PAZ) in Kitwe District has appealed to government to restrict the involvement of foreign players in small businesses that can be adequately undertaken by Zambians.

Speaking in an interview with ZANIS in Kitwe yesterday, Kitwe District PAZ chairman Chabu Nyengele bemoaned the invasion of Chinese nationals in the poultry sector saying they have gravely hurt the local poultry farmers.

Mr. Nyengele said the local farmers are failing to compete with Chinese investors who have a bigger capital and are able to grow their chickens in a shorter period and sell them at a cheaper price.

Mr. Nyengele said government should put measures aimed at protecting the local industries to help them grow.

He added that there was need for government to develop a culture of consulting and to ensure full involvement of citizens on the grass roots in policy formulation.

And Mr. Nyengele said the increased electricity tariffs have negatively affected the poultry sector on the Copperbelt.

He said there has been a drop in the number of local investors that are involved in the poultry sector after the effecting of the electricity tariff hikes in the second and third quarters of this year.

He said the electricity tariff hikes coupled with the invasion of Chinese investors in the poultry sector has pushed local investors out of business.

This year government increased the electricity tariffs by 75 per cent in an effort to make the energy sector attractive for investment as well as balancing the cost of electricity and the cost of its production.

  1. Why is it okay for a Zambian to low class business or jobs in diaspora and not okay for chinese or any European especially white skinned should always do top class job or businesses. We need to change our mindset and reward the hard working citizen or foreigners white or black!

    • That’s not the point here. It’s about empowering low income groups in Zambia. People don’t come to Norway and take over running of businesses unless one has a work permit and / or residence permit.

    • If law says yes then don’t argue but it is important for government to allow certain business area for citizens. But again is it possible these Chinese are zed citizens ?

    • They came into the country under the pretext of being investors but end up selling chickens & roasted maize on the streets & in markets.

Govt has failed to provide jobs but locals were innovative by raising chickens, selling salaula, going to Dubai & China to import various wares. Unfortunately Chinese have come & stolen these jobs bcoz of an irresponsible corrupt & Lazy President & his PF00Ls. Our cross-border women are no longer travelling bcoz Chinese have stolen their jobs. Govt has been in the forefront selling huge tracts of land, national assets & markets to these Chinese.

Where will our people turn to?

    • PAZ needs to introduce permits for chicken rearing. when Chinese come to apply for permits, PAZ should scrutinize their investment permits & monitor what feed they are giving these fast-growing chickens.

I bet you STEROIDS are being used. Don’t be surprised when men start developing huge b00bs, girls developing beards & CANCER becomes rampant in the next few years. The Chinese themselves don’t eat these chickens. They eat village chickens.

Our incompetent corrupt PF00Lish Govt is slowly killing our people.

    • Why do we always want protection? There is a general short supply of chickens on the market meaning that there is room for other players irrespective their race and provided they are legally authorized to engage in business in Zambia. A number of these Chinese poultry farmers actually lease facilities from Zambians, who have failed to run their poultry businesses. I suggest that if you have chickens and no ready market try selling vendors of Shawarmas. Some require as many as 1000 chickens a day. I have sold 400 in one shot before and been paid within two weeks.

    • ‘The Chinese flock and our flock of Chickens’!, ‘The Chinese police reservists’, ‘The Chinese taking over or being given most of the land’, ‘The Chinese center for culture at UNZA’, etc. Won’t these headlines come back to haunt us or our Children?

    • It is because Zambia is not at the same level as those countries in Europe. Pls let us stop comparing Zambia to Europe. MY question to you is do we see such things in Botswana, Namibia, kenya or even Rwanda?

    • Which government? Oh you mean lungu’s/Chinese government.
Stop day dreaming how can a government ban itself.
      And whose going to bribe.
Every sector of govt is controlled by the Chinese.

    • As long as Pa Fipuba (PF) keeps on frequenting China for Kaloba, ba choncholis will remain a pain on the Zambian scene.

    • F*** off mate, don’t even start that coon behaviour that some of you brothers have of trying to compare a low paying job in a developed country to the Zambian economy.

Our economy is only starting to grow and it’s true that certain sectors of the economy such as poultry should be the preserve of Zambian families, the poultry sector is helping reduce the high prevalence of unemployment in our country.

      Wake up!

    • In China, you’re not allowed to work even if you’re married to a Chinese citizen. You cannot even get permanent residence, or citizenship even if you’re married to a Chinese citizen. But in Zambia, we let these Chinese people do businesses, even without proper immigration papers. While there’s nothing wrong with the Chinese who have proper documentation to engage in any business venture they like, we should, however stiffen the requirements for their entry and settlement into the country. Round up all the illegal immigrants and deport them. Also the government should make business loans available only to Zambian citizens. Otherwise, you’ll end up with a country where the natives are nothing more than paupers, beggars, perpetually dependent on foreigners for low wage slave jobs—in…

    • (Continued)… their own country. The foreigners make all the money and live like royalty, while the native Zambians are left holding begging cups. Please, empower the native Zambians. Make loans easily available to them. That’s the only way they can compete.

    • You have missed the point here. Whites in Europe shan jobs taken up by foreigners. Small scale businesses in Zambia are for our people who can not get formal employment. It’s an unwritten policy.

  2. All you have to do is ask them for their paperwork…you do not have to block them…but this govt is so corrupt that its happy with them being high ranking Police Reservists what more in the market with docile Zambians!!

    • With these chaps in office we are being colonized again while we watch. Patriotic Front, what patriotic? It should be branded as unpatriotic front.

    • There is absolutely nothing patriotic about the PF. On arrival at KKIA of late, the line for those holding Zambian passports looks like the one for tourists. There are hardly any blacks. The guy you are calling Chinese selling chickens might actually be a Zambian citizen.

  3. KKKK we asked for free market economics and got it. Work permit, trading license, manufacturing license are given to the cho cho at lightening speed with a few hands oiled and so they will produce papers. But its time to do an audit of all business and see how much of that is invaded by foreigners then from there see how best to address it. However if when you set up CEEC a Minister borrows and fails to pay back, and nothing is done to them or indeed …. need we say more?

  4. Business has no boundaries,if Chinese can make the product available at cheaper, what is wrong with that?just competent with them!.

  5. Chinese are also human beings who needs to work and earn a leaving. Who said that selling tomatoes, vegetables, chickens are businesses for natives only. Its time Zambians stopped being petty and became ambitious enough to challenge the likes of Dangote. Such campaigns are racist and dangerously xenophobic. This hate for Chinese nationals in Zambia is getting out of hand. No one has stopped any Zambians from traveling to any place on earth and set up a business. We are just lazy and always looking for excuses. Remember, such campaigns resulted in Jewish Holocaust by Nazy German.

    • Try and go to China to open a business in their markets and see how your monkey black arse will be booed away and boycotted ………

    • Be true to yourself. I thought it is already law that Chinese are not allowed in poultry and block making? This government is just a fluke kanshi. 2021 we decide, period

    • You must be very unexposed and naive. Clearly you have no idea of what you are talking about. Since you are not lazy but hardworking. Can you migrate to China or European union or Russia and grow tomatoes or onion and see who will allow you. Don’t annoy the many Zambians without formal employment who are working very hard against all odds to tear the land and grow vegetables and others foods so that you the lazy one can buy at a cheap price that does not even recover their production cost. The Chinese is given financial support by bank of China to compete on tomato farming with poor zambian with no acess to any agri loan. Think before you open your mouth.

  6. the chinese chickens grow fast, are big and cheap. The chinese use the same electricity but instead of learning how they do it we want to stop them from growing them. The zambian farmers add a lot funny things like ARV’s, penicillin and anti biotics. This is happening and we should not pretend. currently the prices of food is high and some foreigner comes in with cheap food ..we want to cut them off!!!!?? Competition improves standards and lowers the cost.

    • Chinese don’t eat these fast growing chickens themselves. They eat village chickens

It just shows you that they are using steroids.

Can a Zambian allowed to start growing chickens, selling salaula in China? NO!!! Lets reserve some jobs for the locals.

  7. That is why PF and lungu are hopeless.
Right at the hieght of the electricity load shedding PF should have slapped 200 % customs duty on solar panels and sought local assembly with tax breakes and using 50 % local products like copper and glass or plastics in the assembly……by now we would have had export capabilities and self sufficient in solar panels….small bussiness like these poultry farmers would be able to function ….but maybe PF and lungu wanted to protect their cash cow ZESCO but in the process they have hurt the economy more as people have less money to spend seeing electricity is do high…

    • I am a Zambian and I work so I can buy from the farmers. we cannot all be farmers and because it is my money, I can buy from whoever gives me a competitive price. I am not ready to buy the same chicken at an expensive price because a Zambian grew it. I really don’t give a damn. I want to spend less.. Every business needs competition and if your strategy is weak, don’t complain… go to the drawing board and improve…the same people insisting the Chinese leave the market don’t even buy from the same Zambian farmers they are pretending to protect…as long as it is legal, let them compete….

  8. GRZ must watch those Chinese and carry out regular tests on all foods they grow in Zambia…….just wait and see , we will be having 6 to 8 year old girls and boys going into puberty because of the growth hormones and other chemicals Chinese indiscriminately use to process the foods they sell……in China many have been sentenced to death for poisoning the food chain but poor Zambians are left to their mercy….

    • On that one I will agree with you. Health is paramount but so far no Chinese has been discovered to be using anything illegal to boost their chickens growth.

    • Which GRZ are you talking about? The entire Governmet machinery has been infiltrated by the Chinese and one in govt has the mortality to check what they are doing. Whst we have now is the chinese-GRZ. Everyone in the former GRZ system starting with the so called President has been bribed.

  9. How do you get an investors permit to sell chickens in a market.
Work permits and investors permits let you work and earn an income, accountable to ZRA how does government collect tax from these chinese. Does immigration check tbeir papers. No because chinese are protected species!
Anywayy its a hopeless argument because we are compromised because tbe chinese are the major funders for government. What country appoints untrained unqualified foreigners to their police force.
Development at the cost of losing our identity , our pride and ultimately our country. Is that what we want as a nation.

  10. A lot blabla for nothing….Zambians just cant manage any busines unless it is corrupt. Now they worry about chickens whats next?

  11. Zambians Zambians Zambians! It’s not the chinese chicken we should preoccupy ourselves with but the health risk posed by Chinese food and drink in general. While the Chinese are busy feeding you big chickens grown in 2 weeks, themselves don’t even eat that chicken. Instead, they buy your Village chicken which is more healthy. Do we ever stop to think about the risk we put ourselves in by some of the things we eat? Do we understand as a people why suddenly our cancer rates are increasing exponentially? The Chinese only care about money! They will employ any unethical means to get money. MOH must also show leadership by doing more to educate our people about these risks!

    • It is the responsibility of the PF GRZ to protect zambians and our food chain……but it seems these koswe rats in GRZ are more interested and are fully pre occupied in supplying over inflated fire trucks and anything they can rip off Zambia with 400% markup price……

  12. 1. Do the Chinese use cheap electricity? Just wondering.
    2. Who is better between the one rearing and finally selling his chicken and SHOPRITE from South africa which sells Tomatoes, Kalembula, Impwa, Bondwe, Chibwabwa etc. instead of leaving such commodities to our Mothers and Wives in our townships and compounds? Please don’t be xenophobic when it comes to the Chinese. Let us simply learn from them and compete favorably with them.

    • You fool you can not complete with the chinese and they make sure you can not learn anything from them so you are able to stand on your own . Which Zambian have you ever seen open an own road construction after working for the Chinese. They make sure you don’t even learn their language so that you can’t read their instruction manuals which come in chinese.

  13. Without Dangote cement would be selling at 200 kwacha by now. It was 100 when Dangote came on the scene with his product going at less than 50. Chilanga and other companies cried foul and threatened to close. In the end they became cheaper than Dangote.

    • For Europe and the USA to be where they are today they engaged in protecting certain industries and jobs for their locals to protect and help grow their then young economies…..they are not as du.ll as Zambians to be calling for a free for all…even now the west protects their markets they don’t just allow any Tom dick and mulenga to go and work there….

    • What are you doing in Europe? Have you carried a job from Zambia? What makes a foreigner successful in Zambia is just a single word. …discipline. A Zambian always overcharges for mediocre services and the foreigner exploits this loop hole. This includes government owned companies. ..they mediocre and highly exploitative.

    • That is why we need a more responsible GRZ that will offer continuous free enterpernuial skill training to unemployed Zambians …not just relying on NGOs and letting it be a dog eats dog country ..

    • Are blind that Zambians are very highly trained in business conduct. In the mines courses are conducted for miners who are about to retire. They’ve money but do they put it to good use as per training? I’m sure if government banned the Chinese you’re going to oppose the action because your mind is fixed. Maybe you’re just a baby but let me tell you that KK did everything to enable Zambians but what happened? Only a few did the right thing. So it’s not always government’s fault but also citizens.

  14. Chinese are fond of copying trades and then simplifying them to earn more. This is not only a problem in Zambia. All over the globe people complain about their attitude to flood the market with cheap products.

The best thing Zambians can do is create stronger co-peratives and societies that understand the basic concepts of business and marketing and are able to deal with such competition properly. PAZ sound like cry babies.

    • In all honesty you can not leave poor Zambians to compete with Chinese and Indians….zambians need protection by the government…..instead of giving marketeers free money GRZ needs to embark on a free serious , continious training programme for small scale zambian enterpreniours …..UNZA can play its part by designing a small scale chicken rearing package for say max 30 chickens at a time with maybe solar panels incoopetated to help mother’s raise funds and send their children to school…

  15. …this is one of the many critical areas where Dr Chilufya and team are supposed to focus their attention on…now because there are no monetary benefits its not a priority to them…
….the chickens sold by our ‘friends’ are ‘genetically modified’…they inject the chickens with additives and all sorts of chemicals…..in the end affect our people healthy wise …..some of these cancerous ailments are man ‘made’….the sellers don’t even eat the very chickens….Ministry of health are supposed to be pro active…periodically buy 1 or 2 chickens as samples, test for undesirable levels of dangerous chemicals…its on that basis that the authorities can have the power and a good reason to ban these foreign farmers from trading is such products…

    • That chilufya of your has given you a wrong impression of a hard-working minister. He is the most corrupt of all of them. We would not have so much cholera claiming so many lives today in Lusaka if he was clean and hard-working. He cuts all the deals in the ministry.

  16. Its not up to Govt to restrict Chinese poultry rearing.

    Its up to the PUBLIC.

Is the Zambian population prepared to pay more for Zambian reared chickens ??

Or does the public prefer cheaper Chinese reared chickens ?

All PAZ is trying to do is corner the market and make excessive profits. PAZ does not represent the small black Zambian but a handful of large white owned monopolistic firms such as Hybrid, Eureka, Zambeef etc who are facing stiff price competition

    • That’s the point the “ever opposition ” is failing to see. ..deliberately. As a consumer I welcome anyone who sell his product cheaper than the other person.

    • “As a consumer I welcome anyone who sell his product cheaper than the other person.”

Go and try selling anything in China …..they vigorously protect their home markets…..

    • There are ways you can penetrate a country. The problem with people like you is that you want to stop other people from supplying where you’re not capable. Why not just learn from these people how they make their businesses successful. Actually that’s what the Chinese did to enhance their technology.

    • So imwe ba Spaka you would rather get exploited simply because it’s a Zambian exploiting you? I’ve given you an example of Dangote who without him today building was going to be an impossibility, but you ignore this because your mind is fixed. These guys were exploiting us so ask yourself how come they reduced their prices after Dangote brought cheaper cement.

  17. More importantly if we choose to restrict competition it should not be restricted to the poultry industry.

Construction and road contracts etc must be banned to the Chinese.

Poultry is not the only industry who want a cartel.

  18. Ahahahahahah!!!!!! This is what a market economy entails. Business entities need to compete in an open market. Competition is health for business.

    • You are right! Many of us are strong believers in a free market economy. What is lacking in Zambia is the Legal framework to support that. Free market does not mean using poisonous substances to make your product more appealing just because you want to make money. The truth is we are fast asleep as a country. By the time we wake up, we’ll have shocking health statistics – cancers, infertility, impotence, diabetes, hypertension, strokes, etc! Let us protect our FOOD CHAIN!

  19. Im more concerned about the quality of the chickens being grown by the chinese mentioned. Are they not adding more steriods to make them grow faster?. The west and china are good at manufacturing foods with lots of chemicals to speed up the process and cut costs. This leads to the food being less tasty and introduces foreign inorganic substances into your body. we have seen an increase in obesity, infertility and cancers with a strong correlation to consuming processed foods. Lets be careful with what we are eating. Eat organic!

  20. Mr Nyengele and your PAZ be competitive. stop vilifying Chinese. There are several other foreign nationals in poultry business but you so itched by Chinese. China is open to foreigners conducting business, for example, we have a rich Zambian (former Mulungushi textile worker) who own a textile factory in China, and he is celebrated by Chinese because he pays good salaries.
You can learn or adapt to their model of poultry business and succeed.
It is all about market forces, quality and pricing.

  21. Kubombesha fye bane. Competition will the prices of the chicken. The consumer, however, has a choice where to shop from. In the article it is mentioned that the Chines chickens are matured faster than the ones being rared by Zambians. The chines ones could be genetrically enginered, GMOs as called here in the USA. However, as a consumer you can choose, the Zed prouder, like Whole Foods here, or the China guy. This is really exciting for me who is coming back home.

  22. I have not read the article but would like to encourage people to learn from the Chinese, they copy anything and improve the same. They also don’t miss an opportunity to make money, I have seen them collecting cool cash in our shanties by simply giving us slot machines. Which chickens are we Zambians going to sell when we can not produce enough. You think that by using company resources to buy a bag of feed every so often we can manage? Or by sending our garden boys to buy one on shoulders? Go to China and sell chickens there, only the system will stop you. And if we so wish let us stop buying their chickens and you will find that the pots and plates made in China in our homes will be empty.

  23. My concern is on the chickens that are reared and sold by the Chinese is the smell taste which is NOT pleasing especially to myself. From the time I tasted their chicken meat I quitted partaking broiler and layer meat! It seems the Chinese poultry farmers add some irregular stuff to the feed or just inject the birds for them to grow faster! Health people should take keen interest in such matters because it is the Zambians that will suffer in the end. And such a situation will put pressure on Government to take care of its sick citizens.

  24. You must be very unexposed and naive.

  25. It’s appalling to see how shallow most of you Zambians on this platform think.
Every normal country has regulations to safeguard its citizens on matters of economic importance. Every country has primary responsibility to the survival of its citizens. That’s why a Zambian can not just arrive in Namibia and starts to enjoy the economic benefits of that country that are due to Namibians. When Chinese come to Zambia they come as investors in sectors Zambians can not afford to. So it is absolutely absurd to give an investment visa to a Chinese who end up growing tomatoes and
    chickens.
