Minister of Justice Given Lubinda has described the death of Chilanga District Council Chairperson Maria Malila as shocking.

Mr. Lubinda said Mrs. Malila’s death is a loss to the people of Chilanga who have been befallen with a double tragedy of by-elections.

Speaking after visiting the funeral house in Makeni today, Mr. Lubinda urged the people of Chilanga to mourn the departed Council Chairperson with honor.

He pointed out that he learnt about the sudden death of the Chilanga Council Chairperson yesterday after attending a church service in Chilanga.

“It is a shocking death and we only pray to God to give the family strength in this trying moment. The people of Chilanga now have a double tragedy as they have to choose their area Member of Parliament and Council Chairperson,” he said.

Mr. Lubinda disclosed that the Zambian people already made submissions in the halted constitution amendment process on how to protect the Mayoral and Council Chairperson positions from by-elections.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Malila’s husband, Mumba Malila who is also Supreme Court Judge and former Attorney General hailed the Minister of Justice and his team for having found time to comfort him.

Mr. Malila further said the burial Programme for his late wife will be finalized tomorrow.

Mrs. Malila who was Chilanga Council Chairperson under the UPND ticket died yesterday at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) after suffering from Kidney failure.

  1. Very sad what has happened.

Anyhow, how does it happen that a supreme Court Judge’s wife is member of the opposition

    • @Teta, what a d.mb observation in a sad news column such as this one, Justice knows no boundaries and the learned Judge let his late spouse follow her political beliefs. One would think you would be enlightened because you live ku bukaya but alas….
      May she rest in peace.

    • @ Teta its primitive Zambian politics which finds it strange that one can not follow their political beliefs independent from that of their spouse, members of the wider family, friends and, professional associates. People who associate with those of divergent views always get penalized by their party leadership! Arnold Schwarzenegger a Republican was governor of California his wife a Democrat both actively advanced their partys’ beliefs without much public condemnation as expected in a democratic state but for Zambia and let’s say Africa as a whole this kind of democracy breeds enemies!

  2. #5 Anyoko, like Keith Mukata you mean, thank you for the confirmation.

As for rigging and stolen votes, if this were true I thought this took place massively only in southern province. Imagine 100% votes in modern Zambia, the last time it happened is when Kenneth Kaunda wamuyaya was standing against frog. Otherwise in 2016 wherever normal people voted for fellow human beings elsewhere in the country the result was in the range 30%/70% for or against.l, which is statistically acceptable.
