Inspector General of Police Kakoma Kanganja has described the just ended Chilanga Parliamentary by election as peaceful.

This is despite sporadic cases of violence being reported during campaigns and on poll day.

Mr Kanganja said in a statement that the elections were held in a mature and peaceful manner.

He has since thanked political players who participated in the by-elections for conducting their political activities peacefully.

“I wish to thank all political players and all other stakeholders who participated in the just ended by-elections held on June 5, 2018 in some of the wards across the country as well as Chilanga Constituency for conducting their political activities in a mature and peaceful manner. The accomplishment of a peaceful election was as a result of commitment shown by all political players and high levels of compliance to the provisions of the Electoral Code of Conduct, the Electoral Process Act, the Public Order Act and other pieces of legislation,” Mr. Kanganja stated.

“I also wish to congratulate all the police officers who were deployed to police the Chilanga election and other ward elections for their devotion to duty, hard work and altruism during the execution of this important assignment, that of providing a conducive environment for all political players to conduct their activities. I further thank them for portraying high levels of discipline as my office did not receive any complaint against them from members of the public in general and political players in particular. We are however, disappointed to state that despite the achievement of a peaceful election, there was unruly behaviour recorded in some areas and police are investigating.”

He appealed to all political leaders and supporters to fully commit themselves to peaceful elections by completely avoiding promoting and engaging themselves in acts that have potential to cause chaos and instability in the country during future elections.

“Furthermore, during this post-election period I call upon everyone to remain peaceful and avoid any provocative behaviour. Zambia belongs to us all, therefore, promotion of sustainable peace and security should be a shared responsibility,” stated Mr. Kanganja.

But UK High Commissioner to Zambia Fergus Cochrane-Dyet said the elections were marred by violence.

In a Tweet, High Commissioner Cochrane-Dyet said many voters were frightened to vote due to political violence.

Despite heavily armed police, I’ve seen gangs carrying weapons roaming Chilanga for today’s by-election. This poor woman was a victim: not a great advert for #Zambian democracy.

He added, “The Zambia Electoral Commission doing good job. But turn-out low at stations I visited; many too frightened to vote.”

    • Upnd cows were carrying out instructions from their leaders to hack anyone suspecting to be pf. They scared alot of voters hence low turn out.

    • Well done Mr Kakoma Kanganja and thanks to the people of Chilanga for showing maturity..both PF and UPND….just dont listen to Kambwili and his hate speech….when he was in PF he was the one inciting violence and insulting Tonga people… Kambwili is done and he will never win any election and that’s the reason he cant give up his Mpatamatu seat because he knows he will lose big time if he recontest

    • Violence was at Mukata office that night.
Mel wanted to make peace with UPND, but she just fackyd them up.

    • Elections were Peaceful by your standards, Mr. Kanganja. Just like you said its ok to appoint Chinese deputy police commissioners.

Imagine yesterday’s violence by PF00L cadres was experienced in New York or London, would NYPD police say it was free & fair and peaceful? Even the British High commissioner doesn’t think so.

  1. HaDenial still thinks he is the President and so are his foot soldiers. We call it Hallucinations, HaDelusions & HaIllusions.

  2. Prof. Hansoni must write another follow up letter to the UN with copies to FIFA and the EU on his University letterhead describing what the Police Chief has just said!

  3. UPND will be turned into a terrorist group that’s when these envoys will understand how bitter hh and his inner circle Sadists of the UPND are

    • As a diplomat the High Commissioner cannot mention the political party involved in the violence. He will right a report to his country which act accordingly, if it’s PF aid will be tied to assurances of safe and fair future elections. If it’s the Red Devils appropriate action will be taken without appearing to be siding with PF.

  4. All in all a good job IG for doing your job for once…….the British HC ain’t seen nothing yet if he thinks that was intimidation and violence…..compared to past elections this is a good start.

Let’s hope the HC is setting the standard for future elections….

  5. High Commissioner: “Despite heavily armed police, I’ve seen gangs carrying weapons roaming Chilanga for today’s by-election. This poor woman was a victim: not a great advert for #Zambian democracy”.

If they were red and they scared you too, High Commissioner, that is what we call “upnd cadre”!

  6. Upnd, don’t celebrate the High Commissioners statement and try to accuse your opponents, he may just reveal the colour of your party, it’s red isn’t it?

  7. I am worried, I really hope that someone is comforting h.h after this defeat. Anyone can get bonkus after such a string of defeats. Please ensure that he receives psycho-social counselling to help him face life. I bet even in the Boardrooms, his fellow board of directors must have noticed a very big strain on underfive, manifesting itself in premature aging. GBM is contributing to this, he should resign before they kick him out. After all no one in upnd recognises him as vice president, rather he is just a bemba monkey.

  8. Has anyone head from the UPND? These people seem to have gone in hiding after the results were announced. No statements so far from the perpetual losers apart from some tweet from ZWDogs which the British High Commissioner is yet to authenticate. Where is HH, The harlot, Kambwili and all there online voters? We want to hear from them.

  9. To president HH and Vice President GBM well done. To UPND family don’t lose heart. This was a by election. The while government machinery was in Chilanga. The playing field was not level. On a normal day Charmaine could have easily won.

  10. Upnd has lost even in Mufumbwe and Livingston? What’s left for them now? Get rid of the extra garbage called GBM. He’s a liability. Also the presence of Kambwili is very nauseating to say the least. These are Jerabos.

  11. Commentators: When ever you point a finger to your brother/sister remember that three fingers are pointing at yourself. The meaning of this is that you are worse than the other person. Also remember the TRUTH SHALL SET YOU FREE:
Let us be together as brothers and sisters.

  12. PF tactics worked well. UPND candidate is very popular in Chilanga. She would have won. PF strategy (among other strategies) involved ferrying their voters early in the morning then disrupting voting by 13hrs before the rest of UPND masses cast their votes. To disrupt voting was simply to send bus loads of city centre thugs near key polling stations then deploy Police “to maintain order” by firing a few teargas canisters and then send social messages about ongoing violence in those areas. The descent people stayed away from the polls on hearing the “bad” news.

    • No tactics were used by PF. Upnd used tactics like fielding a morally deficient woman thinking men will fall over her.

  13. Zambia the real Africa do you know that Black people are generally considered dull. Let us for once prove this wrong. Why fight over a parliamently seat.

  14. Dear Sir,
Your office is enshrined with the responsibility of ensuring that the citizenry in this country follow the law and desist from breaking the law, I am not supposed to be the person reminding you of this fact because you are supposed to be the epitome with regard to understanding this statement, at no point does the law under which you are employed say that you are supposed to perpetrate the breaking of the Law by allowing cadres to act with impunity.
Yes you are as human as all of us and may have fears of protecting your Job but I can remind you that you can only protect your Job by doing what is right, because protection of your Job by not doing what is right is temporal protection after which no individual would be happy to see you back in public office, but if you protect…

  15. Your job by doing the right thing, I can assure you that even if you are victimised, such victimisation will only be temporal because the voices of the masses will be with you.

THIS ADVICE IS FOR ALL THOSE HOLDING EITHER PUBLIC OR PRIVATE OFFICE WHERE YU HAVE TO GIVE A SERVICE TO THE GENERAL CITIZENRY

  16. this Kanganja will one day be answerable for the evils done under his command which he keeps denying; Lungu will not be there to defend him;

    • When? If you think your party will rule this country, forget it. Another party will in twenty years time. Dreeeeeaaam and dream.

  17. Surely with all those smashed vehicles and all those rushed to UTH, the IG sees only peace all over Chilanga?!!!
