Solwezi City Council in K32 million debt

Share

Solwezi municipal council is grappling with a total debt stock of K32 million arising from servicing of the new civic center loans whose maturity date is July 2021 and other statutory obligations.

In a statement made available to ZANIS in Solwezi today, council Assistant Public Relations Manager, Esther Chirwa said of the K32 million, K10.3 million is towards bank loans, K17 million statutory obligations and K4.7 million for suppliers of goods and services as well as court awards.

Meanwhile, Ms. Chirwa disclosed that the wage bill for the local authority is in excess of K20 millions of which more than half of it is financed through revenue collected from local tax payers.

She said all the debt the council has is pressing against a shrunken resource envelope of K55 million.

Ms. Chirwa added that the debt is financially stressing for the council and suffocating its ability to deliver appreciable levels of services to the public.

She however, stated that despite the debt, the local authority is implementing more than 20 community projects this year at a total value exceeding K6.6 million financed from local revenue collections.

Ms. Chirwa said the number of projects and amount of money ploughed in service provision will increase with corresponding decrease in debt servicing if the council does not slide back into unsustainable debt.

    • All these debts are down to Lungu. Lungu is in trouble from all directions. Has he even paid the Chinese? The Chinese will soon start looking for him. They will follow him to turkey for their money and they will find him in Ankara or Istanbul and ‘fix’ him there alone. KZ will also not be there to help him. KZ stayed behind being stup!dy with a Russian girl in Munali and ending up on life-support in KFB hospital! Lelo Lungu, lelo Lungu, lelo Lungu …

    • This is one of the most corrupt councils in the country. Why would a small council want to build that huge civic centre using debt money? And you should see the cars they buy. Ford rangers. where does the money come from? Apparently for loans. Why not operate within your means and ensure that you deliver services? Typical Zambian attitude. To add to the mystery, they make lots of money off the mines, and yet the roads and municipal services in solwezi are terrible.
And interestingly it is a UPND controlled council! Which tells us that there is little difference between PF and UPND

    • Ba Analyzer Solwezi is completely run by Upnd so how does Lungu come in. This just shows that you have nothing to pin on Edgar hence your story creations.

  1. You will find construction projects are top of the bill which are overpriced oncluding Lazy Lungus Swazi friends.

    • HH can run this council better. He must be elected mayor and the insolent lazy bum tribal brother or step son hooligan and bully must become his bodyguard. Then Zambia will enjoy peace!

  2. The Solwezi mayor is extremely extravagant. The council bought a Prado 1KD engine for him as official vehicle, but the man wanted Landcruiser 200 series. This is no surprise to me that the council is grappling with debt.
