Vice President Inonge Wina has said that government will wait for the investigative wings to ascertain the cause of the fire which gutted COMESA Market in Lusaka last night before making any statements.

A Tanzanian woman who was trading at the market died from suffocation as she tried to retrieve her goods.

Ms Wina has told parliament during the vice president’s question time that it’s too early to predict the outcome of the findings the investigations.

Ms Wina said that it’s only after the police have determined the extent of the damage and the cause of the fire, will government inform the public of the findings.

Last night, goods worth million of Kwacha were destroyed in the fire that swept through COMESA market which is a trading place for mostly cross border traders.

The fire whose cause is not known is believed to have started around 20:00 hours.

Fire engines from the Lusaka City Council, Zambia Airports Corporation and Zambia Air Force struggled late in the night to put out of the fire.

The fire at COMESA market followed ANOTHER FIRE tHAT guttED Buteko market in Mufulira on Wednesday. Last year on 5th July, LUSAKA City market was gutted in a fire.

Meanwhile, President Lungu has visited the Comesa Market to witness the damage done by the fire

    • I bet Lungu went there simply to make sure nothing was left standing.

Zambia is the only country where these fires only occur on prime land.

The Chinese can not believe their luck.

      God help us

    • Under the PF government investigative wings already have the answer that it’s the opposition but are playing piki piki napikidoli of opposition parties and then to pick the unfortunate ones to slap them with the crime!

  2. This Old Hen Inonge is clueless ….Look at Lazy Lungu and his Home Affairs minister who are they fooling ….a serious accident happened in Kitwe at Black Mountain they cowered away …now here is a fire they have arranged again.

  3. This Old Hen Inonge is clueless ….Look at Lazy Lungu and his Home Affairs minister who are they foooooling ….a serious accident happened in Kitwe at Black Mountain they cowered away …now here is a fire they have arranged again.

  4. Mapatizya formula – UPND belief to cause lawlessness in the nation! It was a mistake for government to release HH from prison. He needed to go to court. Please NEVER make another similar mistake Hagain.

  5. We need to get people, especially, marketeers in the insurance net. These are calamities which are unpredictable.Insurance markets have just concentrated on vehicles and houses.Products such merchandise in a market need to be covered in insurance scheme policies.Insurance portfolios need to broadened so that every one is brought into the net. This is the time that insurance companies should bring in innovations in their products offer. There should be broad diversification in insurance products they offer to the community.Sensitization should be a key in bring people like, marketeers,in the insurance net.

    • mbaluso – no insurance company in the world would be foooolish enough to insure your property in a wooden shack that you call a shop where you use charcoal brazier for keeping warm and for preparing food.

    • Jay Jay,good point you have put across. These are debates that I like not character assassination and attacking each others reputation. But suffice to say that, the higher the risk the higher the premiums.Insurance companies should educate marketeers in spreading their insured products. For instance,if one marketeer, was able to sell his insured items in different markets, the ones that do not catch fire will be able to cover up for those items that have been affected by the inferno.
There should be a mechanism of putting people in a situation where they would have been had it been the calamity did not occur.Everything that a person does has a risk attached to it.

    • mbaluso – simply ignore those who are on the thread with a malicious agenda…on to the topic unfortunately the markets are not run 100% by the municipal council in Zambia…in England a market is run like a Shopping Mall owned by the council but the Market manager and their team run it who collect rent.

    • Insurances are there, these traders don’t just want to manage their risks thinking it’s expense.

  6. HaJayJay & HaSpakata, “If HH were the Zambia National Football Coach, Zambia could have won 3 World Cups!” Hallucinogens! Childish.

  7. As much as the govt. is going to build the so called modern markets, they should let competent institutions run them, just as they want to let competent institutions investigate the cause of the fires. The cares left to run these markets have zero idea about running them and what is involved. Such things happening only shows the incompetence and disregard for rule of law.
How many millions of Kwacha are people going to lose for us to say, ‘ENOUGH’.

  8. HH and UPND are danger to Zambia’s peace! Please NEVER take any threats from them as innocent. Use them to prosecute Animo Farm.

  9. The conduct of UPND tribal Horganization online is evidence enough of what this tribalist gathering is all about. Government must come up with means to counteract this even on those who commit terror remotely on computer terminals. The U.S. does it and Zambia can do it too.

    • #Zambia4Peace, FBI evidence suggests that the actual Sharon goes for work, while a rabid animal maybe a rat or dog left at her home uses her name typing messages full of hatred. You will get full details once the investigation is completed.

  10. Pleas lungu how many disaster areas will you be touring before your useless GRZ actually starts working ? Fires have been happening for the past 4 years and your GRZ has done nothing.

    • UPND is a tribal and terrorist Horganization. As long as it is harround the president will be attending many meetings to console the nation BUT I am positive Animal Farm’s days ha numbered.

  11. Copperbelt voters take note. These Lusaka politicians think a disaster is only when it happens in Lusaka. They have not commented on the fire in Mufulira and like Jay Jay says they were absent at the black mountain tragedy in Kitwe. They think Zambia is Lusaka. The roads in copper belt townships are gone replaced by trenches, drainages are blocked in Kantanshi Kankoyo everything in cb townships is a mess and all Lusaka politicians know about this breakdown of cb infrastructure and they are doing nothing about it

  12. Whatever the cause of the fire, I think most of us know that most of these structures deemed as markets are fire hazards before even trade begins. We simply do not build or operate with health and safety in mind – no preventive measures or disaster forecast management.
It is also a reflection of poverty – the inability to create an economic empowering environment for locals, hence the consequence of allowing people to ‘erk out’ a living in whatever form to survive. No prior provision of protective resources in place nor proper visioned manpower to ensure the same. We are in the end, a sharply divided society – between those who have the means to usurp resources through their positions and links and those who are left without any social net or cushion from the perils of operating…

  13. This what happens when you let PF cadres take over the running of markets. All they are interested in is collecting levies for their own pockets.Remember, other parties are not allowed in the markets.
