The Independent Churches of Zambia (ICOZ), has called on Zambians in parts of the country where elections will be held to remain peaceful and maintain unity.

ICOZ Chairperson David Masupa said there is need for Zambians to conduct themselves in a peaceful manner and avoid any form of violent activities before, during and after the July 26 Mayoral, council Chairperson and local government elections.

Speaking in an interview with ZANIS in Lusaka, Bishop Masupa explained that peaceful and violent free elections are a catalyst for economic development as they are a vital role in enhancing investor confidence in the country.

He said political leaders should take it upon themselves and ensure that they restrain cadres from engaging in violent activities during and after elections.

Bishop Masupa disclosed that his organization has embarked on the name and shame campaign as a way of making political parties to take action.

He also added that if not curbed violence can lead to voter apathy which is not good for a democratic country like Zambia.

Bishop Masupa has further urged people to turn out in numbers and exercise their right by casting their vote tomorrow.

He has since commended the two main political parties, the United Party for National Development (UPND), and the ruling Patriotic Front (PF), for signing a peace agreement to uphold peace during and after elections.

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ), will tomorrow be conducting Mayoral elections for Lusaka district.

The seat fell vacant following the death of former Mayor, Wilson Kalumba and seven political parties are contesting the seat.

Other elections will be held in Eastern, Western, Luapula, and North-Western provinces.
