Zesco United say those who doubt that their achievements cannot eclipsed the legacy FAZ Super Division team’s should first have a closer look at the statistics.
Zesco on Wednesday collected their seventh league title since they returned to the FAZ Super Division in 2004.
Their feat saw them surpass the winning records of old guards Power Dynamos and Green Buffaloes on six wins including Kabwe Warriors on five titles.
Only Nkana on 12, and Mufulira Wanderers on nine, have an edge over Zesco who are now tied on seven wins with Zanaco, who have raked in all their league triumphs since 2002.
“Look, statistics don’t lie. From 2000, the 19 years that have passed, Zesco has won this title seven times, Zanaco seven times,” Zesco CEO Richard Mulenga said.
“Nkana twice, Power twice, Arrow once, so we consider Zanaco’s to be our only rivals.
“The other two neighboring teams (Nkana and Power) are really rivals of each other.”
Mulenga went on to say that the feat of overtaking Wanderers and joining Nkana at the top was not impossible.
“That is our intention, this is the seventh, five more to go, we will, easily, they are not our rivals,” Mulenga added.
Meanwhile, Zesco and Nkana meet in the Barclays Cup quarterfinals this Saturday in Kitwe.
Zesco are the record Barclays Cup champions with five wins. Nkana are yet to win the Barclays Cup.
