Shepolopolo star midfielder Mary Mwakapila wants to work harder this year in order to realise her dream of playing professional football abroad.

Mwakapila said she is inspired by international striker Barbra Banda’s move to Spain last year.

Banda defied odds and signed a two-year deal with Spanish Premier Division side EDF Logrono.

Mwakapila of Green Buffaloes said playing at the 2018 Africa Cup in Ghana helped her to earn the needed experience.

‘My 2018 season was wonderful but tough. I managed to be part of the team that was in Ghana for the Africa Cup and we worked hard as a team,’ she said.

The dribbling wizard also featured for Zambia at the 2014 Africa Women’s Championship in Namibia.

‘This year I am looking forward working extra hard so that I can find myself playing abroad as a professional. I feel I need to put in more effort in the new season,’ Mwakapila said.

‘Barbra’s move inspires me a lot and it drives me to say if she did it I can also do it. Being the first female player to play in Europe it is an inspiration but it takes individual hard work, discipline and mental strength,’ she said.

Mwakapila previously played for Bauleni Sports Academy before joining Buffaloes.
