Nkana and Zesco kick off season with Charity Shield showdown

The 2019 local football season starts on Saturday with Nkana and Zesco United clashing in the Samuel ‘Zoom’ Ndhlovu Charity Shield final at Arthur Davies Stadium in Kitwe.

This match will be a curtain-raiser to the transitional 2019 FAZ Super Division campaign that begins on Sunday and runs up to June.

Nkana last season edged Zesco 4-3 in the Charity Shield final played in Lusaka.

The two teams are expected to take this game cautiously knowing too well that they will again meet in the CAF Confederation Cup Group C match on February 3 in Ndola.

‘We just need to give people a good game,’ Zesco assistant coach Alfred Lupiya said during a pre-match media conference on Friday.

‘We just expect a good and fair game; we have difficulty assignment (CAF match) so we don’t need to break each other’s leg. Even the referees must be fair,’ Lupiya said.

Nkana midfielder and vice Captain Chisamba Lungu said Kalampa will take the game seriously.

‘We promise to give the best game of the season to the fans. Tomorrow’s game will be the game of the season because Nkana and Zesco we are not meeting in the transitional league,’ Lungu said.

Meanwhile, the widow of Samuel ‘Zoom’ Ndhlovu is expected to be in the stands at Arthur Davies Stadium during the Charity Shield final.
