Zambia Police to Re-introduce Random Patrols Stop Road Nuisance

Police have warned Bus Drivers who pick up passengers at undesignated bus stops that their days are numbered as random police patrols will soon be in full force.

The Police argue that loading passengers where there are no bus stops has a potential to cause congestion and road traffic accidents.

Police Chief Road Traffic Inspector, Yoram Phiri ,notes that a number of bus drivers do not follow road traffic regulations and stop to pick up passengers anyhow causing congestion.

Mr Phiri told ZANIS in an interview that Drivers must not treat bus stops as bus stations where they have to wait until the bus is filled to capacity.

He observed that mini bus drivers are in the habit of stopping at undesignated places which he said causes congestion especially on the Great East Road ,Arcades bus stop, with the newly built fly over bridge.

“This disturbs the flow of traffic,” he said.

“The bus stops are designed to accommodate not more than four buses at a given time and because our bus drivers do not observe this, we normally have an overspill of buses on the main road. This contravenes the road safety guidelines.” he said.

Mr Phiri advised motorists on the Great East Road to take precautions whenever they are approaching the Arcades fly over bridge.

“There is a hump, they need to slow down to avoid causing accidents as they can hit pedestrians that use the tunnel located under the fly over fridge.” He said.

  1. PF commandos own those illegal bus stops. There’s nothing the police will do to stop them. Lungu won’t allow you to touch his security wing

  2. This is very important to ensure law and order. And especially safety of our people. You cannot drive as if you are in a jungle or your father’s backyard. So anyone found wanting can you ensure they are dealt with. We are tired

  3. Dual carriage way has been reduced to single lane on some roads because the outer lane is now on long bustop on roads such as Chilimbulu, Burma an Mosi oa tunya. Even roads such as Great North Road around SOS. The police should use unmarked cars for this to work.

  4. Deep inside their hearts the traffic police officers are smiling and saying “Twalya again”. I personally have a distaste for these guys because they inconvenience motorists more than the bus drivers themselves.

  5. Please our local govnment musf ensure that we hav as many pick up places in order to reduce conjestions especiall this time of rain season.

  6. That headline: Zambia Police to Re-introduce Random Patrols Stop Road Nuisance should read: Zambia Police to Re-introduce Random Bribe Stop Road Nuisance

  7. Why did the police stop patrolling in the first place. Zambia suffers from illogical people. This is academic. They should have been thinking this way to begin with.

  8. What Yoran Phiri doesn’t know is that money exchanges hands. On Freedom way police will impound you for making a U-turn but leave buses that close 1 lane to load. The same happens on Lumumba. They will impound you for beating the red light but leave buses loading on the road. The minibus drivers will tell that badya kudala. Come out of your offices and travel on these buses. That’s the money which has built some people, we know them. Some are on this forum everyday

  9. Good Implementation, but what needs to sort out now is the parking spaces and also issuing ticket penalties for ppl who are not following the rules because I’m pretty sure you have all the data for all the cars that are driven by ppl in Zambia unless otherwise.

  10. Mindset by both the drivers and passengers is what you must work on changing. Otherwise you are simply mounting more ATM machines for our able leadership of ZP traffic officers.

  11. In Ndola, Minibus drivers have no respect for motorist they pick passengers just inside the roads without laying by especially Kwacha Road through to Chifubu, Kwacha Road through to Pamodzi and Kawama komboni. At Chifubu market you can’t pass properly. Let’s hope the Police will do a good job.
