Former Foreign Affairs minister Joseph Malanji arrested as PF accuse DEC of abuse

Share

THE Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) has arrested Former Foreign Affairs Minister Joseph Malanji and Former secretary of the Treasury Fredson Yamba.

According to a statement released to the media, DEC said that the two were arrested for authorizing the transfer of Money to a the Zambian Turkish Embassy without the following procedure.

And Patriotic Front Member of the Central Committee in charge of information and publicity Raphael Nakachinda has called on the law enforcement agencies to stop arm twisting suspects saying this kind of behavior should not be tolerated.

Hon. Nakachinda is further accusing the law enforcement agencies of using bond applications to blackmail suspected individuals to subdue them into giving information that can be used against them.

Speaking to journalists in Lusaka on the arrest of former foreign affairs minister Joseph Malanji, Hon Nakachinda demanded that President Hakainde Hichilema should exonerate himself from such behavior by being consistent with his pronouncement that all individuals are entitled to bond.

“It has come to our attention that Mr. Hakainde Hichilema has given fresh instructions in his quest to harass PF officials. Hon Malanji has been arrested today and we now understand that the arresting officer Shishuwa Shishuwa, acting on instructions from State House wants to use that arrest to blackmail Hon Malanji to aide them in their investigations,” he said.

“The position of the law is that at the point of arresting an individual, investigations should have been concluded. You can’t have a situation where individuals are called to Anti Corruption Commission, Drug Enforcement Agency and Zambia Police Service arrested and when they are seeking to be granted bond, they say we will give you the bond if you give us this and that document.”

He emphasized that this kind of behavior should come to an end.

  1. EVEN IF YOU WERE A STAUNCH PF SUPPORTER, HONESTLY, WOULD YOU BELIEVE THIS GARBAGE?

I WOULD BELIEVE DEC, who says: ” …Malanji is detained while waiting for him to meet the conditions for a Police Bond”.

  2. PF will always cry foul regardless of what the current govt does, people want accountability and anything that was done dubiously must be checked and corrected. The two officials have the right to defend themselves before the relevant authorities period. PF cohorts must realise that this is not witch hunt of any sort and instead support the crusade against corruption. PF members were to much enshrined in their dealings and overlooked such issues that anyone who talked about it while they were in power was either silenced or termed just jealousy. The fight against corruption and thieving of public resources will not yield results if every time an individual is arrested the entire PF starts to cry. These people are not guilt and have the liberty and capacity for proper representation and…

  3. So it seems they were using the embassy in turkey to launder funds. Who was the ambassador then, maybe he could shed more light or even become a state witness if he wasn’t a beneficiary.

  5. If one is innocent, one cannot give information which would be used against one as such information would be non-existent. Are the PF saying that they in fact know the whole truth already? I wont pronounce Joe Malanji guilty of anything because he is a mere suspect at this stage.

  6. This one was wealthy before he got into politics so this could be a strategic move by UPND to stifle the financial muscle of the opposition. Why are they not arresting self confessed thieves like Chimbwili? We need evidence otherwise this one might end up costing the taxpayers.

  10. We ain’t seen nothing yet………..

This is where lungu thought he was a clever theif……….

He deliberately turned a blind eye to the abuse of public funds by his close circle to closely bind them to the corruption and looting for which he was marred in , neck deep……….

The net is closing on lungu himself……………

  11. Spaka – The problem with money is that it leaves a trail ..when that money was transferred for some inflated purchase then the Turks paid back the kickback via a PF lawyer who disbursed the monies…some people were arrogant enough to purchase a helicopter ..really laughable.

  12. @ FutureZed crimes are committed by people irrespective of social status! While the “Have not’s” yearn to have, the “Have’s” and wealthy yearn to have more! Thus the point of agreement between those who don’t have and the wealthy is both keep toiling trying to amass whether through honest means or they both engage in criminal activities and the difference being only in magnitude of targeted “gains.”

  13. Deja Vu – Please dont start quoting legal phrases about presumption of innocence…just type what you really want to say!!

  14. And joe had a foul mouth during his tenure as minister- i can recall very well when this guy went like ‘ state house isn’t a toilet wina akamba ati chooka ni ngenemo’ … what his gona do now tables have turned.

  15. Everyone knows malanji is a thief including PF. He had even stolen from his women, bankrupting one of them. So please wait for him to have his day in court.
