The people of Simungoma in Mwandi District have received a major boost in maternal health care following the official handover of the newly constructed Simungoma Rural Health Centre Mother’s Shelter.
The facility which has a 30-bed space will provide expectant mothers especially those from remote areas with a safe and comfortable place to stay before and after delivery, reducing risks associated with home births and long travel distances.
District Health Director Dr Maiba Shampika said the new mother’s shelter marks a significant step in improving maternal and child health outcomes in Mwandi District.
Dr Maiba noted that the facility will enhance access to skilled care for pregnant women and help reduce maternal and neonatal complications in the area.
And Access to Health Technical Director Hamusonde Songiso reaffirmed his organization’s commitment to supporting government efforts in strengthening primary health care delivery in rural communities.
Mr Songiso said Access to Health was proud to partner with the Ministry of Health and other partners in ensuring that the Simungoma initiative comes to life.
And Mwandi District Administrative Officer, Joseph Mubita thanked Access to Health for the gesture and commended the organization for supplementing the government’s efforts in providing quality health services.
Mr Mubita added that partnerships like these demonstrate how collaboration between the public and private sectors can bring tangible development closer to the people.

The colourful handover ceremony was characterized by cultural performances, traditional blessings from the Barotse Royal Establishment (BRE), and expressions of gratitude from community members who welcomed the long-awaited development.
