Heavy Rains Destroy Twete Bridge in Kasama

Heavy rains have damaged Twete Bridge in Lukanga Ward in Lukasha Constituency in Kasama District in Northern Province.

Kabila Village Headman Alex Chilekwa says the Twente Bridge has been damaged following heavy rains that have been experienced in the area.

Mr Chilekwa says the development has made it difficult for the people in Kabila Village to access services across strean.

He has called on government to quickly come to the aid of the people of Kabila Village and put up a temporary bridge at across Twente Stream.

Mr Chilekwa said this will allow communities to easily access medical services from John Chikula and Munkonge Mini Hospital.

“Government should consider putting up a temporary infrastructure here to allow us access services from across the river,” he urged.

Mr Chilekwa urged the public using the Munkonge-Kabila Road to be cautious as they approached the Twente stream, as it was in a dangerous state.

He said the crossing point has become a death trap, especially for school going children who were accessing education from the other side of the stream.

“We have several pupils who are crossing the stream to access education from the other side, and this situation is posing a danger, especially to younger ones,” he noted.

The traditional leader appealed to the local authority to also consider working on the Munkonge-Kabila road using the Constituency Development Funds before it completely becomes impassable.

And Kasama District Commissioner Annie Paul said   government will quickly work on the crossing point using the disaster component of the Constituency Development Fund.

Ms, Paul noted that the community in Kabila area was productive, and the washed-away bridge made it difficult for them to transport their produce.

“The situation at the crossing point has distracted several activities for the people of Kabila village and those who are across, this is productive area where people move in and out, with state of the bridge the situation is affecting who used to make their daily errands,” she said.

She further said government attached importance to easing the accessibility of the people across the country and that the bridge across Twente Stream will be worked on.
