North-Western Province Permanent Secretary, Grandson Katambi (RTD) has recommended that Healthy Learners construct health rooms at Kayombo Boarding Secondary School and Mushindamo Girls Secondary School to enhance access to healthcare services for pupils.
Col Katambi (RTD) says the two Schools are located far from existing health facilities, making it necessary to establish health rooms within the learning institutions.
Col Katambi says the initiative will bring primary healthcare services closer to learners and improve their well-being and academic performance.
The Permanent Secretary further has commended Healthy Learners for constructing health rooms in more than 80 schools across the Province.
Speaking when a joint delegation from Healthy Learners, North Western Provincial Education Office and Rural Development under the Ministry of Local Government paid a courtesy call on him in Solwezi district today, Col Katambi said the health rooms are supplementing government’s efforts to improve the quality of education and healthcare services in schools.
Meanwhile, Healthy Learners Head of Programme Delivery, Gastone Zulu says the project aims at complementing the government’s efforts in providing primary healthcare services to pupils while they are at school.
Mr Zulu says the organisation is currently targeting 85 Schools in six districts of North Western Province namely Solwezi, Mwinilunga, Kasempa, Kabompo, Mushindamo and Zambezi.
He disclosed that Healthy Learners plans to construct more than 40 health rooms in Solwezi District, 20 in Mwinilunga, 18 in Kasempa, 16 in Mushindamo, 14 in Kabompo and 12 in Zambezi District respectively.
Mr Zulu further revealed that the organisation has trained 574 teachers, 200 Heads and Deputy Teachers, and 126 healthcare providers to spearhead the provision of primary healthcare services to learners in schools.
