Three more suspects who escaped from lawful custody at Kapiri Mposhi Police Station have been recaptured, bringing the total number of rearrested escapees to seven.
Central Province Police Commissioner Lemekani Chirwa, who did not disclose the identities of the latest suspects to be recaptured, said police have intensified the manhunt for the remaining escapees.
Mr Chirwa told the media in a statement that the seven suspects have been rearrested since June 13, 2026, when 33 suspects facing various offences, including murder, defilement, aggravated robbery and theft, escaped from police custody after allegedly overpowering officers on duty in Kapiri Mposhi District.
He said members of the public have played a key role in the recapture of the suspects by providing valuable information to the police.
“We appreciate members of the community for the cooperation and information they are providing, which has led to these recaptures. I urge all concerned citizens who are against criminality to continue assisting the police with information that will lead to the arrest of the remaining escapees,” Mr Chirwa said.
He reiterated that police remain committed to apprehending all the remaining escapees and bringing them before the courts of law.
The suspects escaped from Kapiri Mposhi Police Station on June 13, 2026, after allegedly overpowering police officers on duty.
Meanwhile, four police officers who were on duty at the time of the escape have been charged with negligence.
