The Lusaka Magistrates’ Court has sentenced a teacher at Matero Boys Secondary School to eight years’ imprisonment with hard labour for stealing more than K700,000 meant for General Certificate of Education (GCE) examinations.
Acting Chief Resident Magistrate Silvia Munyinya convicted Alifas Banda of theft by public servant before imposing the custodial sentence.
The court heard that Banda, in his capacity as a public officer at the school, was entrusted with funds collected for the payment of GCE examination fees. However, he dishonestly diverted the money for personal use instead of remitting it to the relevant examination authorities, resulting in a loss exceeding K700,000.
In delivering judgment, the court found that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt, leading to his conviction and subsequent sentencing.
