Minister of Youth, Sports and Arts Elvis Nkandu has commended Kansanshi Mining PLC for investing US$800,000 in the construction of an ultra-modern tartan athletics track.
Mr Nkandu said government is grateful for the support it continues to receive from Kansanshi Mine in the development of sporting activities and infrastructure.
Speaking during an engagement in Solwezi with Kansanshi General Manager, Mr Nkandu noted that the construction of the athletics track will greatly strengthen the development of sports in Northwestern Province.
He emphasized that the development of sporting infrastructure is essential to fostering and sustaining various sporting activities.
Mr Nkandu stressed that government remains indebted for the continued support it is receiving from Kansanshi Mining PLC.
“The support from Kansanshi Mine is strategic in the development of sports and arts in the country,” he said.
He added that the private sector plays a critical role in complementing government efforts to promote sports and arts.
“Through the development of sports and arts, young people can be empowered and earn a decent livelihood,” he said.
The Minister further indicated that collaboration between the private sector and government is key, as it enables government to expand opportunities for participation, nurture talent and create pathways for young people to thrive through sports and arts.
Mr Nkandu assured Kansanshi Mining PLC that government will continue to create a conducive environment for the private sector to thrive, enabling companies to make profits and reinvest in the community.
Meanwhile, Kansanshi Mining PLC General Manager Meiring Burger informed the Minister that the mining firm is supporting more than 400 athletes.
Mr Burger disclosed that the athletes are being provided with structured coaching, equipment and opportunities to participate in competitions.
He further indicated that Kansanshi Mine is also assisting young people to balance their sporting ambitions with academic goals.
Commenting on this year’s Kansanshi Marathon, Mr Burger said over 2,500 runners are expected to participate in the May event, which he described as the largest community sporting event in the region.
He expressed optimism that the marathon will contribute to the growth of sports in the country and assured government that Kansanshi Mine will continue investing in the development of sports in Zambia.
