A 21-year-old woman of Chipata has been brutally murdered in an attack allegedly carried out by her boyfriend, who is reported to be involved in illegal gold mining.
The victim, Violet Sakala, was allegedly attacked by her lover Mphandika Phiri on Friday afternoon after the two had spent most of the day together.
According to reports, Phiri later asked Violet to accompany him as he headed toward Nchaba Village while carrying gold in his possession.
However, along a secluded road near Madzimoyo Secondary School, the suspect allegedly attacked the young woman with a knife, inflicting multiple deep cuts.
Confirming the incident, Robertson Mweemba said the victim sustained three deep cuts on the neck and one deep cut on the breast, believed to have been inflicted using a sharp instrument.
Police say Violet was last seen alive walking with Phiri after he asked her to escort him. Neighbours later became concerned after hearing desperate screams coming from the area.
At around 17:00 hours, the victim’s brother, Davison Sakala, was alerted about the incident and reported the matter to Chipata Central Police Station.
Police officers who visited the scene confirmed the killing and later recovered a knife believed to have been used in the attack about 12.5 metres from where the body was found.
The suspect fled the scene immediately after the attack and remains at large, prompting police to launch a manhunt.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances that led to the gruesome killing.
