The United Party for National Development (UPND) has called for continued peace and unity in the country as Zambia moves towards the general elections.
Speaking in Lusaka, UPND National Chairperson Collins Maoma said the country is currently experiencing a peaceful political atmosphere, saying this is an environment that needs to be observed even as the country heads to the polls.
He emphasised the importance of maintaining stability, urging political players and citizens alike to uphold peace and reject any form of political intolerance.
“The President in his love for the Zambian people gave a direction to bring to an end acts of violence and I would like to thank the UPND cadres and the citizenry for adhering to this call,” Mr Maoma said.
Mr Maoma also encouraged unity among Zambians, stating that the country should move away from divisions based on tribe, while promoting inclusivity across all sectors of society.
He further noted that the current administration under President Hakainde Hichilema has prioritised media freedom, allowing journalists to operate more freely.
Meanwhile, the party highlighted several achievements it says have been realised since assuming office, including the reintroduction of free education, which it said has enabled over 2.5 million children to return to school.
Mr Maoma also cited the expansion of the Constituency Development Funds (CDF) from K1.6 million to K40 million, increased employment of teachers and progress in debt restructuring as part of the government’s development agenda.
The remarks were made during an event where the party received four Councillors, namely, Gilbert Chota, Matthews Musonda, Florence Mwambazi and Lombe Kaweme who were urged to align themselves with the party’s vision.
The UPND has since reiterated its commitment to fostering national unity and peaceful political engagement ahead of the country’s elections.
