Mighty Mufulira Wanderers president George Katongo has said his club and Kalampa Nkana must be utilised to hype and market the Zambian Premier League.
Katongo said Mighty and Nkana remain the most popular teams in Zambia that commands a huge following.
He said despite not being at their peak the two teams have demonstrated resilience and the tenacity on the local football front.
Nkana is the most successful team in the Super League with a record 13 titles to their credit, while Mighty is the most fruitful team in cup competitions with over 40 trophies in their cabinet.
Mighty and Nkana recently battled to a 1-1 draw in a league match played at Shinde Stadium in Kantanshi, Mufulira.
“Mufulira Wanderers and Nkana are indeed champions as they showed in their recent meeting at Shinde. You saw how entertaining the game was,” Katongo said.
“I think these are teams that must hype the Zambian League. Historically, these are teams everyone wants to watch. We are trying to bring back that pedigree in football. These are the champions we have in the country,” he said.
Katongo stressed that with enhanced sponsorship the two giants can earn their past glory that saw them dominate Zambian football for several years.
NKana won their league title in 2020, while Mighty trace their last Super League victory to 1996.
“Football is a costly undertaking and it requires adequate sponsorship. If we could get more sponsorship, we can see Kalampa and Mighty get back to the international level.”
Katongo remarked: “We have played international football at Shinde Stadium, Nkana have been to the final of the CAF club competition. Wanderers have won many cups even from the East and Central Africa region.”
“We have sponsorship from our parent Mopani Copper Mines but we want to bring more sponsors on board,” Katongo said.
In the 2025/26 league campaign, Wanderers are in the top five and Nkana are stunted in the bottom team of the 18-team competition.

Nkana are too rowdy for marketing purposes. They still have fans who think bullying others is support. That is 20th century logic. We are in the 21st century.

Mighty have a good brand. If they are clever they should sell themselves to Patrice Motsepe, Moise Katumbi or Dangote. These could inject money into the brand
Nkana Fans are very indiscipline coupled with primitivity to warrant any support or marketing
Is the new FAZ chief unable to entice sponsors? Is he as hopeless as the one he replaced?
Football used to be our only comfort in times of political turmoil like now
I agree with you Kalulushi
Is the new FAZ chief unable to entice sponsors? Is he as hopeless as the one he replaced?
Football used to be our only comfort in times of political turmoil like now. We would forget all our fashion, political, tribal, differences for Chipolopolo.
If I were in Mighty I would take Bancroft Blades’ advice seriously. Manchester City were sleeping. They were sleeping on a positive brand content to be number 2 to United.
The Saudis came and bought them and now it’s United who are playing catch up with their neighbors. Mighty are sleeping on potentially Zambia’s biggest football brand. Sell it! Get an MBA to do a business plan for you and come out of these muddy waters. Even Mamelodi Sundowns were unknowns until Motsepe bought them.
True, Siboza yayi. Even PSG in France have just become European and ligue 1 champions after the Arabs bought them. Football is big business for rich men wanting to make a name and money. Invite Musk to Zambia
How about local Zambian entrepreneurs?
Don’t they venture into football?
Is any of the football clubs on Zambia’s stock market?
