Mwiimbu defends arrest as Mundubile disputes motive

Home Affairs and Internal Security Minister Jack Mwiimbu says the arrest of Brian Mundubile was based on suspected offences, placing the action firmly within the mandate of law enforcement authorities.

Police say the case involves allegations of aiding, abetting and counselling the commission of an offence, with officers acting after receiving information that warranted investigation.

Mwiimbu states that no individual can claim exemption from the law on account of political position, adding that enforcement agencies are obligated to act whenever a suspected offence is identified. He says allowing exceptions would weaken the credibility of institutions tasked with maintaining order.

Mundubile has rejected that framing, arguing that the arrest must be understood within the context of rising political activity ahead of the August election. He maintains that his actions were part of legitimate political engagement and has sought to position himself as a leader focused on public service rather than personal interest.

The divergence between these positions has turned the case into more than a routine enforcement matter. It now sits at the centre of a broader national conversation about how law enforcement actions are interpreted in a politically charged environment.

Timing remains a critical factor. With the election approaching, actions taken against prominent political figures carry heightened significance, influencing how freely political actors are able to organise and communicate with supporters.

Government officials insist that procedure, not politics, guides enforcement decisions. They argue that investigations are triggered by evidence and that the law must operate independently of political considerations.

Opposition figures continue to challenge that position, pointing to the cumulative effect of enforcement actions on political activity. They argue that even if each individual action is legally grounded, the broader pattern can shape the political environment.

This dynamic reflects a wider trend. Legal processes, administrative decisions and regulatory interventions are increasingly being drawn into political narratives as the election draws closer.

The Mundubile case illustrates how quickly a legal matter can take on political weight. Statements from both sides have framed the situation in terms that extend beyond the immediate allegations.

Public interpretation is likely to depend on how the case progresses. Each stage, from investigation to court proceedings, will be closely watched for signals about institutional consistency.

The role of the police is central to this discussion. Their actions are expected to demonstrate neutrality, particularly in a period where political competition is intensifying.

At the same time, political actors are expected to operate within the law, creating a balance that is often tested during election cycles.

The outcome of the case will contribute to how that balance is perceived. A process that is seen as fair and consistent may reinforce confidence in institutions. A process viewed as selective could deepen existing tensions.

As the situation develops, the focus will shift from initial claims to evidence and legal argument. That transition will be critical in determining how the case is understood in both legal and political terms.

The broader environment remains sensitive. Each development feeds into a narrative that shapes public expectations ahead of the election.

The intersection of law enforcement and politics is not new, but its visibility increases significantly during election periods. The Mundubile case has brought that intersection into sharper focus.

  1. We agree with him. We said it when HH was in opposition, that he was not being targeted because he was in opposition but because the Police were just doing their work back then as they are doing now.

  2. Mundubila is a thief who previously awarded himself government contracts, which were overpriced and for which he did not perform any work. His companies are currently facing difficulties due to the lack of government contracts, which is why he is attempting to return and misappropriate more funds from the treasury. They have tried to conceal their actions, but there are significant gaps in their cover-up.

  3. Indeed when you receive calendars and diaries for the year six months into that year you cannot be protected by the law purely on account if affiliation. Or indeed if you own a property in Forest 27 it can be demolished regardless of political inclination. Lastly when you a fugitive extradition is the response of law abiding nations….true JM

  4. @Hanjaliba you are in Zambia yet know nothing.I just blame the schools you have in Zambia.Supporting criminals cause of Tantameni

    • Hanjaliba, please ignore this HaMusonda chap. His President has lamentably failed, and now out of panic he is trying to paint Mundubile black. If you find out his real name, then you will know that it is part of that same thing. He is a liar, otherwise Mundubile was going to be convicted years back.

  5. Indeed Mundubile is as innocent as any Zambian whom UPND has failed to prosecute and convict. They are unashamedly hunting down every opposition leader. How can a suspect be accused of knowing a dead leader of a neighboring country? Is that the kind of prosecution Jack Mwiimbu and our ruling party are proud of?

  6. Ati suspected. And you arrest someone? Well HH is suspected to have undervalued a state business so that he could buy it in shameful insider deals. Arrest him then. Because you arrest people
    ” based on suspected offences”

  7. @Anti HaMusonda.HH has managed the economy very well only illiterates like you are still behind. When a collection of thieves begins to articulate as if state authority primarily serves to protect friends, family, and political affiliations from examination, the republic itself is jeopardized. Observe the fools who celebrate thieves, as Nibayama hails from the same village. Shame.. Zambia has dedicated the past four years to emerging from a fiscal abyss. Debt restructuring, adherence to IMF guidelines, decreasing inflation, a stronger currency, and an increasing interest from investors in government securities are not mere slogans. They represent macroeconomic indicators that credibility is being restored.
