Minister of Mines inaugurates MRC Board to strengthen mining regulation

Minister of Mines and Minerals Development Paul Kabuswe has inducted nine board members for the Minerals Regulation Commission (MRC), with an to regulate legal mining, issuance of mining licences and accountability in the mining sector.

Speaking during the inauguration in Lusaka, Mr Kabuswe implored the newly appointed board members to promote responsible mining practices, enforce compliance with mining laws and ensure the sector continues contributing to economic growth, employment creation and foreign exchange earnings.

ZANIS reports that Mr Kabuswe reiterated that mining remains the backbone of Zambia’s economy.

The Minister noted that the appointed board members have therefore been entrusted with the responsibility of ensuring that the country’s mineral resources are managed prudently for the benefit of both present and future generations.

“The mining sector is rapidly evolving due to global market dynamics, technological advancements and increasing demands for transparency and good governance, the Commission’s role in regulating mining activities is therefore strategic and critical to national development,” Mr Kabuswe indicated.

He stressed that government expects the board to promote responsible mining practices, enforce compliance with legal and regulatory frameworks and create an environment that attracts sustainable investment into the sector.

“There must be no room for complacency, conflict of interest or compromise when it comes to safeguarding Zambia’s mineral wealth,” he added.

The Minister further stressed the importance of collaboration between the Commission and key stakeholders such as local authorities, traditional leaders, mining companies and communities in addressing challenges affecting the sector.

Mr Kabuswe also urged the board to curb illegal mining and ensure a clear process of issuance of mining licences standards in order to safeguard natural resources.

He reaffirmed government’s commitment to creating a stable, predictable and investor friendly policy environment aimed at positioning Zambia as a competitive mining destination globally.

Meanwhile, MRC Board Chairperson Matongo Matamwandi said the board is committed to serving with integrity, diligence and accountability following the confidence and trust placed in its members by government.

Mr Matamwandi explained that the Minerals Regulation Commission plays a critical role in regulating and promoting a sustainable mining sector, which contributes significantly to economic growth, job creation and national development.

He therefore noted that the board will focus on providing strategic oversight and policy direction while upholding strong corporate governance and ethical standards.

He reaffirmed to strengthen institutional systems, improve compliance and enhance regulatory frameworks in order to promote investor confidence and ensure stability in the mining sector.

And MRC Director General Tomliuson Hara stressed the importance of collaboration among government, industry players and cooperating partners, stating that open dialogue and partnerships are key to achieving the Commission’s mandate.

Mr Hara highlighted that the new board brings fresh perspectives, diverse expertise and strengthened oversight that will help guide the Commission in fulfilling its mandate of regulating the mining sector effectively.

He also explained that the board will play a critical role in providing strategic leadership and ensuring accountability in the management of the Commission.

He has since reaffirmed management’s commitment to working closely with the board in strengthening regulatory frameworks, promoting compliance and ensuring Zambia derives maximum value from its mineral wealth.

The new appointed members include, MRC Chairperson Mr Matongo Matamwandi and members, Gerald Mwila, Charles pole, Kanyata Mayando, Barabina Mporokoso, Majokwa Munkumba, Isabel Munkumba and John Siame.
