Zambia Selected for €10 Million Global Health Fund Initiative

Zambia is among four African countries chosen to benefit from a €10 million global health fund aimed at strengthening primary healthcare systems and advancing progress toward universal health coverage.

The funding, provided by European Investment Bank through its development arm, EIB Global, will be channelled through the Health Impact Investment Platform.

According to a statement released by the institution, Zambia joins Angola, Burundi and Ethiopia as the first group of sub-Saharan African countries selected to access the initiative.

The programme is designed to address technical and institutional capacity gaps that often limit the ability of countries to attract large-scale health sector investments.

Under the initiative, Zambia’s Ministry of Health is expected to receive support to improve the planning, prioritisation and development of health projects, enabling them to become investment-ready and attract additional domestic and international financing.

The HIIP is a partnership involving EIB Global, Islamic Development Bank and the World Health Organization. The three institutions have collectively committed an initial €30 million towards technical assistance and capacity-building programmes in developing countries.

EIB Vice-President Marek Mora said stronger collaboration among governments, development institutions and private investors is essential to improving healthcare infrastructure across Africa.

He noted that coordinated efforts can help reduce investment risks, attract private capital and ensure that financing aligns with national health priorities.

In addition to the four African beneficiaries, the initiative is also being extended to several low and middle-income countries in Asia, including Kazakhstan, Maldives and Tajikistan.

The funding is expected to support Zambia’s efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery and expand access to quality health services across the country.
