The Mazabuka Municipal Council in Southern Province has secured land for the construction of a solar power plant under the presidential constituency energy initiative.
Mazabuka Municipal Council Town Clerk, Judith Maambo, has confirmed that a three hectares piece of land has been secured on which a four megawatts solar power plant will be constructed under Mazabuka central and Magoye constituencies.
Ms Maambo said out of the four megawatts, two will be for Mazabuka central while the other two will be for Magoye constituency respectively.
She was speaking in an interview with to the media at the identified site for the presidential constituency energy initiative.
“The presidential constituency energy initiative is under public private partnership between ZESCO, ZANEC and ZCCM-IH with the council as beneficiary from the revenue that will be generated from the two solar power plants,” she said.
Ms Maambo said the piece of land has been identified in collaboration with Zambia Institute of Animal Health (ZIAH), the line Ministry of Agriculture, the local authority and ZESCO.
She said it was identified in consultation with engineers from ZESCO and the local authority due to its proximity to the national grid.
The Mazabuka Municipal Council Town Clerk said once implemented, the project is expected to contribute to addressing power deficits and reduce load shedding in Mazabuka.
Ms Maambo also said the project will further bring about socio economic development in Mazabuka because the lives of the people will be enhanced through employment opportunities.
The constituency energy initiative was a directive from the Office of the President to all local authorities across the country to identify and secure land for each constituency to build the two megawatts solar power plants.
