FRA offloads maize to reduce mealie meal prices

stack of over 14 000 x 50kg bags of maize bought by FRA at Chipoka Satellite depot in Mbala
THE Food Reserve Agency (FRA) has signed another contract with millers across the country at a cost of K98 million for the purchase of 539,000 metric tonnes of maize in a bid to reduce mealie-meal prices.

FRA executive director Chola Kafwabulula said the millers are from all provinces and the agency is optimistic that this will further reduce the prices of mealie-meal in the country.

He said FRA will be monitoring all millers that have bought maize to ensure that they reduce mealie-meal prices.

“We are hoping that as they buy the maize from us on reduced prices, mealie-meal prices will go down because that is the reason they are buying the maize at reduced prices,” he said.

And Mr Kafwabulula said three people have been arrested in Lusaka for attempting to steal maize from the FRA by purporting to be agents of a miller.

He said the three went to the FRA depot in Lusaka purporting to be agents of a known milling company.

Mr Kafwabulula said the trio’s attempts were thwarted after a tip-off from alert members of the public about the planned theft.

He has urged members of the public to continue assisting the FRA in its attempt to arrest crime.
