Authorities in Kasama impound more maize meant for illegal exportation

Government has impounded over 200 metric tonnes of maize which were about to be exported to neighbouring countries illegally on goods trains at Chanda Weyaya TAZARA station in Northern Province.

Provincial Permanent Secretary, Hlobotha Nkunika, confirmed the development to ZANIS in Kasama after visiting the scene today.

Mr Nkunika explained that the scam was unearthed after the alert Zambia National Service (ZNS) officers pursued the goods train which was reported to have loaded the grain in question from Kasama’s TAZARA station en-route to Nakonde Border.

The PS said fortunately the vigilant officers managed to intercept the goods train which was carrying the illegal maize and impound the contraband at Chanda Weyaya TAZARA station yesterday.

He said when they opened the wagons they discovered the said number of bags which had neither importation nor exportation permit from relevant authorities.

The PS has since called on the security wing to continue being on the lookout for people importing and transporting maize without proper documents in the area.

He observed that if left unchecked the trend is likely to cause hunger in the country, hence the need to curb the scourge.
