Boxing promoter Anthony Mwamba has saluted the Samsung Young Boxing initiative

The Samsung Youth Boxing is part of the seasonal junior sports programme at the Olympic Youth development Centre that began in 2011 with an initial US$240,000 deal with South Korean electronics giant Samsung that also covers Judo, Table Tennis, Badminton and Handball.

Mwamba, who reached welterweight division quarterfinals at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, said the initiative was a boost for junior boxing in the Midlands Amateur Boxing Association (MABA) zone.

“My comment over this tournament, is that it is encouraging to see that Samsung is sponsoring this tournament in MABA.They are building amateur boxers,” Mwamba said.

“Actually we need this tournament nearly every weekend if we can produce boxers who will represent the nation at Olympic games.

“It is more encouraging that boxers are coming up every year.

“At Exodus, we have 36 boxers, so we need them and encourage them to train hard and also encourage the trainers to spend more time with the boxers to train them not just to bring boxers to come and be part of the tournament.”
