Another member of Team Zambia tumbled out of the Rio Olympics in Brazil on Wednesday as medal hopes continue to slim.
Female swimmer Jade Howard failed to qualify for the 100 meters freestyle semifinals after bowing out of the 2016 Olympics in the heats in Rio de Janeiro.
Howard finished 8th in heat two with a time of 58.74 second outside the 54.50 second top 16 cut she needed to make the penultimate stage ahead of Friday’s final.
Howard joins Mathew Punza in the Judo and Boxer Ben Muziyo eliminated from Team Zambia’s seven-member Rio representatives in Brazil.
Today, Thursday, Ralph Goveia will be in the pool in the heats of the men’s 100 meters butterfly.
Thereafter 100 meters men’s rep and 2012 Olympics semifinalists Gerald Phiri will take to the track in the heats on August 13.
Africa female 400 meters champion Kabange Mupopo will also be in action on the same date in the first of two events for her in Rio starting with in the heats in her speciality.
We need to pump in more money into such ventures ro improve our chances. We are sending only 7 athletes while other countries are sending hundreds at a go.
We have sent 7 athletes its an utter joke…imagine the money wasted on that swimming pool BUFFOON Kambwili was bragging about when he was Sports Minister. This is reverse for sure under this empty tins even UNIP used to send more …we are happy to waste money on overpriced roads. Just imagine if ZAA co-partnered with Zambia Breweries for every bottle one buys 1 Kwacha goes towards sponsoring the Team Zambia.
That’s what Fosters did with their team 10 years ago and the govt gave incentives to companies that sponsored sports and that is not football.

You can’t just send 100’s of Zambians the rules are they must compete in several other events over the 3 yrs proir to the games and there is a minimum level they must meet before they can go to the games. so Zambia must start training their future stars now for medals in 8 yrs
@ken. I think you have to meet the minimum qualifying time set by the olympics committee. Therefore Zambia can not send a chunky like me clocking in 40sec for a 100m dash.
It would help to get your facts straight. Jade Howard placed 4th in the second heat in Rio with a new Zambian Record time of 58.47. She placed 35th overall, improving five places over her seed time.
Rather than saying she failed, you should be lauding her success. She is the fastest women’s swimmer in Zambian history. She was the fastest Sfrican 100 Freedtyler in the 2016 Olympics. She represented her country very well.
If you had any thought that she should win a medal, then you don’t understand swimming well enough to be reporting it. Zambia need to continue to develop swimming if it ever hopes to contend for medals.
