Zambia U-23 draws Senegal in 2008 Olympic qualifier

Share

The Zambia Under-23 national soccer team and Senegal ground out a 1-1 draw in a 2008 Olympic Games qualifier at Lusaka’s Nkoloma Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Zambia went down in the 44th minute when goalkeeper Kalililo Kakonje failed to communicate with defender Eugenie Shamakamba and the indecision allowed Senegal’s Dauda Mbow to guide the ball into an empty net.

Zambia missed several chances early, allowing Senegal to settle down and dictate the match until they scored.

After scoring, the Senegalese team slowed down by feigning injuries but they awoke to reality when Zambia’s Stopphira Sunzu, who replaced Simon Bwalya, forced the ball into the net after it slipped through goalkeeper Ba’s fingers on 69 minutes.

Zambian striker Signs Chibambo could have scored the winner for Zambia but his powerful drive was parried for a corner 10 minutes to full time.

After the match, Senegal assistant coach Joseph Koto blamed the referee in officiating.

Koto said the referee denied them a penalty before gifting Zambia a goal from a foul.

However, he said he was happy because his charges had achieved a mission of snatching a point from Zambia.

“We are very happy with the result because our aim was to get a point. Now we have to win all the remaining matches. We did not come with our nine professionals but we will ensure they play when Zambia comes to Dakar,” he said.

Zambia have seven points going into the last round while Senegal only have two points. Other group members, Cote d’Ivoire and Mali were expected to play later Saturday.

But there was drama as Senegal coach Soulemane Camara played mad and caused a stir when he refused to leave the stadium after being sent off.

Camara disputed Zambia’s equaliser and walked onto the field to order his players to abandon the match played before a capacity Nkoloma Stadium.

Referee Lambart Eyene of Cameroon gave Camara marching orders but the slender coach refused to leave the pitch and instead ordered his boys to boycott the match. They disobeyed him.

Match commissioner Walter Nyamilandu of Malawi and other officials struggled for 10 minutes to force Camara out of the pitch but he opted to walk to the VIP stand where he met resistance from alert Football Association Zambia (FAZ) head of administration Julio Chiluba.

After a physical tussle which Chiluba did not seem winning, Nyamilandu ordered that the charged coach sits in the VIP stand. But while the match was delayed for 10 minutes, the referee only added five minutes at the end.

Camara’s dispute was based on what he adjudged an infringement on goalkeeper Mamadou Ba thereby allowing Sunzu to stab home the equaliser in a goalmouth melee in the 69th minute.

  1. Yes 3-0 to zambia but still a long way to go, SA seem to coming into the game. I hope the boys don’t get carried away. Their world cup winner coach shaking his head in disbelief!! It’s happening folks

  2. 9 minutes to go ..red card.. zambia is down to 10 men, big chaos Mccathy involved, I guess he has been frustrated by the zambians, We are still holding well as SA makes a Change

  3. Sorry chansa sent off for a second yellow and McCarthy tried to push him off the pitch and the whole chaos erupted. Things have settled. Zambia wasted a cross. 4 minutes to go folks and we look good despite being 10 men

  4. Thank you Soccer Fan No. 7, you have been marvelous. Who coul have predicated such an awesome performance. I gave it 1-0 for Zambia but I remained very positive.

This is a disastorous weekend for South Africa. Their Under 23 lost 3-1 to Ghana and now the senior team Bafana Bafana has gone down 3-1 to Zambia.

South Africa has very good names but Zambia has players. It’s not the names that you have in the team, it’s how you play on the day.

Benard Phiri (Atlanta) and Amore, I told you to be positive, look at the result now!

  5. south africa is USELESS. Why is it that pienar plays for Everton and Bakala is in Angola. This is crap they dont deserve to be where they are.

  6. HE SHOULD BE IN MANCHESTER UNITED.

CHRIS KATONGO CHRIS KATONGO CHRIS KATONGO CHRIS KATONGO CHRIS KATONGO CHRIS KATONGO CHRIS KATONGO CHRIS KATONGO

  7. Good Job boys and VIVA Ba Zambia and they have shown true Chipolopolo and great sportsmanship for a producing such a spetacular result beyond the expectations of many both in ZED and RSA. Congrats guys and Ghana 2008 here we come!!!!!

  8. The south africans are always pausing that they are from playing scotland etc. But look at them they have been hammered. They are crap. Parrera will even resign. He cant work with crap. Mccarthy is finished. He was good in 98 now he is useless. Katongo should not be playing for Bronby he should be in England not that useless Mokena. Mbesuma was just unfortunate he is world class he should be at a bigger club. Portsmouth are just crap they tried to finish our man and yet Mbesuma is better than all thier players.

  9. No problem folks, that is why these blogs are for. My final thoughts. We have a good team. Two players that stood out for me were Mweene and Isaac Chansa. They were outstanding. For MBesuma, well the jury is still out. He was not convincing. They shut him out completely. Maybe we can try out some other players. Mulenga was good and a constant threat. The future looks good. Yes Katongo, scored awesome goals from tight position. Just shows how good a finisher he is a deserves to be captain.

Good day for Zambia, two of our coaches have sent teams to nations cup and tomorrow I will walk proud. Congrats Ben and Patrick. You have showed us how great your generation of players were by what you have done. Well done boys keep it up. Am out.

  10. I’d like to congratulate the boys on the wonderful display of football. Patrick Phiri must be credited for his solid game plan. This is what won the gmae for Zambia: the physical approach we had plus a sterling performance from Chris Katongo. The decision to play three in midfiel and attack was a great one that fully utilised out talented strikers. Great Job Patrick, can we give the man his job back?

  11. twashiwina imbwe inshi they talked to much in the media they thought will kicking the balls outside or in their assholes. proud to be zambia we good though we don’t have stadium. See you ku Ghana baice.

  12. MBESUMA IS A VERY VERY VERY IMPORTANT PLAYER. EVEN IF HE DID NOT PERFORM TODAY WE NEED HIM. REMEBER THAT GOAL HE SCORED AGAINST CHAD WAS IMPORTANT. HE WILL PICK UP. LET US NOT FORGET HOW HE USED TO SCORE HATRICKS. WE NEED HIM

  13. #chandafkaunda
thanks for being positive mwana ,i cant believe that patrick phiri has done it,i think i will send him some mbeba (rats)to cerebrate the victory.

  14. Chris is very swift and uses his speed as a striker to go passed defenders. Brondby will finish him if he does not move out.He has not been playing regulary for the last few weeks. Mulenga,Chansa, Mbesuma,Bakala,Sinkala are of thier own class it is hard to rate them. My caution goes to the massive Zambian fan who trooped to cape town to be careful so that the celebrations does not sour into loss of lives and injuriy of ay such things.VIVA ICHIPOLOPOLO!!!!

  15. Congrats to chipolopolo, Iwas so positive from the outset that we wanna bury south FArica, thank you too to everyone who was positive that zambia will win. The game plan was good, though Ian Bakala made some silly mistakes here and there, Viva to Katongo for the three goals.

  16. patrick phiri doesnt listen, isaac chansa has proved him wrong,he should have included this boy in the team along time ago,we wouldnt have been in this position we was.Good job isaac chansa and the team.the soccer fans spoke include chansa and he did agood job in the midfield.

  17. I’m so impressed, I couldnt believe it. We have qualified at SAs expense. Please all in Cape Town party safely

  18. Iyee chipolopolo…go Zambia go.Honestly gentlemen i am tired of seeing Zambia qualify for the African Cup finals but don`t bring home the trophy. When are we ever going to do it? Is it the money? Ghana here we come. This time guys not just appearance but to grab the trophy. Go Zambia go.Chris Katongo, i promise you a car if that will motivate you to do it again.Iyee chipolopolo iyee chipolopolo…

  19. Meanwhile Nigeria under 17 has won the championship after beating Spain 3:0 on 11 do shoot outs. The Nigeria Goalie saved all the three shots. This is the third time Nigeria has won the U_17.

  20. Is it South African Radio? Here is an analysis at BBCsports:

1514: FULL TIME! South Africa 1-3 Zambia The whistle goes for full time and Zambia get Group Eleven’s automatic ticket to the next year’s African Cup of Nations in Ghana. Chipolopolo have eleven points same as South Africa but the Zambians win the group thanks to their better head-to-head record. It was a poor performance for the hosts of the 2010 World Cup but they still have a chance to pick up one of the best three runners-up slots for the tournament in Ghana.

Zambia and South Africa both have a goal aggregate of 6. South Africa has scored 10 goals against 4 while Zambia has 9 goals against 3. In this case, it is the head-to-head performance that counts. While South Africa scored 1 goal in Zambia, Zambia has score 3 in South Africa. On agregate, Zambia ‘wins’ with an aggregate of 3-2 and tops the group.

  21. Stunning qualification for Zambia

Zambia were 3-0 up after 20 minutes.

Zambia pulled off a shock 3-1 win over South Africa in Cape Town to qualify for the Nations Cup as winners of Group Eleven.
South Africa’s fate will depend on other results, but they have a strong chance of taking one of the best runners-up spots due to their healthy goal difference.BBC match Report. So there you have it..Go Zambia Go Zambia.>>>

  27. This is wonderfull to hear. Congratulations Chipolopolo boys. You have done us pride. Beating Bafana Bafana 3-1 at their home is not a joke, it calls for hard work. Keep it up! Looking forward to such good performance even at the finals. Chipolopolooooooo iyeeeeeeeeeee!

  28. congrats the copper bullet, you have made us very proud here in Kenya and i urge the kenyan brewers of tusker to supply nairobi with abundant beers cos 2nite we ‘ll drink our lungs out celebrating the victory, katongo should pass through nairobi enroute to denmark so we can buy him some booze for the job well-done. Imwe ngipusheko bushe why didn’t that hopeless referee also give red card to Mccarthy for that unsportsmanship behaviour during the sending off of Isaac chansa

  29. twabasepa bamukuta na Mccarthy wabo a finished player they always praise in their media.Which bad news did Mccarthy had for zambia? imwe pelizi, that below par perfomance from him? ine mwebantu uluse

  30. I can’t believe the result, but then again I can! Well done boys. This shows was what dedication and focus can do. Dedicating the match to Chaswe, replicating the CAN’94 performance in memory of the great team. And the confidence from the U20 and U23 results. Zambians continue being positive, because there talent and potential yet to be peaked! This has made my day, week, year!!!

  31. It had to take Chaswe’s death in the Holy land for Zambia to kick RSA. May his soul rest in peace and thanks to his friends, you made him and us proud.

We have poured cold water on the South African here.

    Go Zambia, Go Phiri!

  32. Thank you to all the supporters that showed up at Newlands and the many that connected from Zambia via Television to support the Chipolopolo boys. Did anyone notice that the Zambian flag was flying upside down? I went over to the camera man to radio the flag guys but they could’nt still get it right. The good thing is the boys faced the grand stand so, your sychology South Africa did not work!

  33. The sack is sealed we are on top. Bafana Bafana also are in because Algeria has lost to Gambia.

  34. Bane !

May I pose the question which some of us maybe asking. If Phiri and team can achieve results like this why are we in a hurry to hire an expatriate coach? I believe ba Ben pabili Bamfuchile has also qualified Namibia to CAN 2008.

  35. I am very happy for the chipolopolo boys, thank you guys also for all the good news, we didn’t see the match here. Go Chipolopolo.

  36. Yes,thanks alot for the victory guys.Hope the govt will have pride in you now.We need enuff of them stadiums out there for the game to pick up.You got all the support in Ghana, you can do it…………….

  37. There is dead silence amongst the SA. They really cannot believe it. All the boys did extremely well. At least for the first time in a long time I noticed composure, maturity and confidence in the Zambian team. We were also physically better than BB. Mweene in goal was superb, the boys at the back, hey what can I say, were all fantastic. In the midfield, Isaac, Andrew and Bakala were excellent. Upfront Katongo and Jacob tormented BB. Mbesuma had a decent game as he was tightly marked. All in all, hats off tot our boys for a splendid performance. Some of our boys deserve playing for big teams in Europe. Many SA players are in so called big teams because of the colour of their skin and/or connections. I guess all the pessimists have been made to eat a humble pie.
Guys do we really need an expatriate coach. He will just bring instability in the team. Viva Zambia

  38. C.A.Parreira threw Water bottles and Chairs after the shocking loss to Zambia (e-news TV). We made them eat the humble pie, the said all kind of crap in their papers, radios.Sunday Times Sport front page said” Zambia beating SA at home and scoring 4 goals is like asking Swaziland to win the Soccer World Cup by Kgomotso Mokoena when i got my Sunday Times in the morning and saw that i just laughed.K.Mweene awesome ,Billy Mwanza bottled B.Mc Carthy,Isaac,Andrew brilliant in Midfield,Jacob gave them a torrid time upfront the guy has improved,Chris Tsunami as the call him here what can i say.C.Mbesuma did not score but he kept A.Mokoena and N.Morris at bay.
I agree with the guys on the blog alot of our boys deserve to play in big teams in Europe. As we kept saying names don’t win you games

  39. A big up to all the Zedians in SA(Mzansi)and those who made the trip all the way from Zambia to Newlands you looked colourfull on TV.As i said the South Africans would walk out of Newlands quite as we did when the beat us 0-1 in Lusaka.Man i traveled for the game back home it was hurting to lose at home, now these guys know how it feels. The less we say about McCarthy the better what arrogance.

  40. The coach Partrixk Phiri has broken the jinx in style the media had began tagging him as the only Zambian coach who had failed the tem to the African cup of Nations several times.Welldone ba Partrickand the boyys. Congaratulatiuon also to ba Pabili in Namibia whose team has also qualified.

  41. Did the new Zambian coach watch the game against SA. We as Zambians will not accept a standard below what we saw in Cape Town. Bertalan Biceski is a good coach with a good record for Hungary and Korea where he worked winning the league there. However Patrick Phiri should be made his assistant to give him advice.

  42. With the win, I feel the FAz should map out a strategy of preparing the team for AFCON in Ghana. Prior to yesterday’s match, BB had trained in Scotland with all its Prof excluding Benni, while Zambia was in Togo without all its Profs. So if we can get all the Pros and train for a month before AFCON in Ghana, am sure zambia would be serious contenders. This is the time to send PP for training abroad so that when he comes back he should be offered another contract . FAz should also reconsider Ben Bamfuchile, so that PP and Ben could be co-coaches, it will be a very good pair I can assure you. Ben is a good coach too. Congtras Ben. Let Phiri accomplish his mission of taking the team to Ghana, so that if FAz wants an expatriate coach ,it should engage him for the 2010 world cup qualifiers. Having expatriate coaches does not neccesarily mean anything. Look at BB despite having Parreira, they looked tacctically, technically inferior to the superior zambians, coached by a home Man.

  43. 10 years later Zambia gets its deserved revenge. Who can forget that 3-0 drabbing we suffered at the hands of SA in 1997. Yes the Lord has finally answered my players.

The team was splendid. Thanks to big Pa (Patrick Phiri) For me Patrick Phiri was the man of match for me and he deserves to be praised.

Bafana should know that money can buy you a Doctor but not health.

We have taught them not to unnecessarily over rate themselves.

We shamed them in their own Bedroom viva Zed.

It is good to see Chansa playing again.

  44. i watched the game from the first whisle and to tell you the truth carlos pereila did not march true zambian game plan especially in the first 45 min.All the players played well as a team .it is true that these players deserve to play in top leagues. This serves as a lesson that do not write a team off until all is lost.Congrtz chipolopolo and zambia c u in ghana

  45. Buchi Boy#55 Asked a very good question. We should be extremely careful on the issue of engaging a foreign coach. All important factors must be looked into. As for now, well done boys and the coaching staff.

  46. Guys I’ve been Pat Phiri’s biggest fan since his days as under-17 national coach. The man is good tactician, the 4-3-3 that he is introduced rather than the traditional 4-4-2 is making Zambia feared as a nation of lethal strikers.

Did you see how physical our boys were? We went in there with tackles flying, BB was always being pushed off the ball by our robust boys. Billy Mwanza was wonderful, Jacob has improved, Chansa impressive.

  47. Its time now not to relax preparation is is essential for success. I dont think it will be wise to make Phiri assistant coach it wont work because he can also on his own deliver. All what we need is to play competitive football from now onwards. You see having friends makes a coach to know the weakness in the team. Look we played Tazania, Botswana and Togo as part of the preparation this was a good job. FAZ has to learn to invest to get results. Our under 20 did well also because of the preparation they were given.

  48. Has the job been offered to the expatriate coach? If not, then its best if Patrick Phiri takes the team to Ghana. How often do we see African teams switching to foreign coaches just before a tournament?

  49. #69 I agree, people are caught up in this euphoria and miss the fact that Fat boy Mbesuma is not performing. He actually missed a seater yesterday. We could have whacked BB by 4-1 and made sure the didn’t even make it to the Can2008. Keep the 4-3-3 formation and bring in this Zesco boy Kalaba. Lets put Fat boy on the sidelines till he starts banging in goals for his Turkish side and secures a regular place. We got to get rid of this sentimental attachment to the past performance. Who knows we could just be helping our FAT boy find form. Look at what happened to David Beckham. Please drop this FAT boy , we have better players to replace him with

  50. # 64 it did not even take Zambia 10 years to revenge. Zambia has beaten South africa on a number of occassions. In the recent past we beat them during the Cosafa when katongo scored the first goal and chamanga scored the second one. It was a draw after 90 minutes, but we won nevertheless on penalties. secondly it ws last year during the AFCON and now. What more in 1991 when we beat them 3-0 at home and away 1-0. so we have a better record than them. We can play them for 1 million minutes they will never beat zambia again. Never!

  51. # 69 You out of order. All the players yesterday performed beyond expectation.C.Mbesuma had two shorts saved by the keeper, one after turning two defenders inside out.We don’t need this after yesterday’s result. I wouldn’t be surprised if you are South African scared to reveal you identity.

  52. Anonymous #69 & 73 you seem not too familiar with soccer. The team played as a unit and that’s what got us the points.Dont you think that by Mbesuma playing the way he did opened the way for Chris Katongo?

  53. Just leave Mbesuma alone. Who equalised during Zambia vs Chad. Mbesuma abipe apapene sure. You guys got a short memory. Mbesuma was tighty marked, because that was the player BB thought was gonna destroy them, only to give chance to Katongo. Generally all the Zambian players played well and I dont want to single out any player, as I will be very unfair to this. Big up to Zambia. We just need lots opf friendly matches with West and North African teams for Ghana 2008. Our success will depend on good preparation. And when we player friendlies, we need to bring the foreign based players so the guys could gel together very well. The only teams that threaten me are Ghana, Cote Di Voire and Camerron, including, Tunisia and Egypt. The rest are not a threat.

  54. Guys be realistic Mbesuma is human. He cant score hatricks in every game. He scored against Chad and you dont seem to care about that? Give him time. Shevchenko, a world class striker, struggled at chelsea before gaining form. Mbesumais indespensible to Zambia. He has no substitute. His presence in the team scares the hell out of our opponents.#69 do you know how scared Bafana were before the game of Mbesuma. This gave Katongo chance. I am vey sure the critics who are talking about Mbesuma now are the very same people who said SA would win.

  55. Spot on Billy and #77.We now need to lobby Govt to prepare the boys for the Ghana. All the players that played yesterday need to be retained and maybe two or three players from the U-20 and U-23 need to be included in the team. The future looks bright for Zambia Soccer we just luck resources but talent wise we among the best in Africa. With adequate preps we will indeed be a force to reckon with at Ghana 2008.PP and F.Simukonda of course need to be part of the Coaching team even if we manage to get a GOOD Coach. P.P yesterday out witted C.A.Parreira technically What a game plan.

  58. We now know who the pessimists are: This is what said before the zambia RSA game: bernard phiri ,atlanta georgia Said:

Bro i admire your courage and positive thinking, but come off it Bro ,zambia has NO chance what so ever of beating bafana bafana, our current national team sucks so much that we even fail to beat chad at home .i wish them all the best though i know we losing on sunday.

A fuming Carlos Parreira, coach of the South African soccer team, threw water bottles and chairs in the Bafana Bafana’s dressing rooms as he ripped into his players at Newlands on Sunday.
“I have never lost a home match in this manner,” a dismayed Parreira said after his team had lost 3-1 to Zambia in an Africa Cup of Nations match.

The South Africans produced what was probably their worst performance since Parreira had taken over as coach.

“It’s the first time in my life that I’ve lost a home match by such a margin. I never experienced such a defeat when I coached Brazil,” he said.

Parreira confirmed that he had torn into the players at halftime when the Zambians were leading 3-0. Asked whether he had thrown water bottles and chairs, he said “yes”.

“One needs balls to play this game,” he added. “It was a nightmare start for us. We did not concentrate; we lost focus.”

Zambian captain and striker Chris Katongo scored a hat-trick within ten minutes and Parreira said afterwards, “No team can make so many errors and expect to win.

“International players do not make such mistakes. We gave the match to them.”

Parreira replaced Papi Zothwane before halftime after the player’s mistakes had contributed to two of Katongo’s goals.

“I’m not the kind of coach who takes players off the pitch within the first 25 minutes of the match, but it was necessary. Things were becoming even worse.”

The coach did have some complimentary words for striker Benni McCarthy, who scored the home team’s only goal to equal Shaun Bartlett’s record of 29 for South Africa.

“I am only sorry that Benni’s return coincided with our worst performance,” he said.

  60. Well done chipolopolo and the PP(Patrick Phiri) led coaching staff.I think we don`t need a foreign coach to take over the reigns from the master tactician PP.My assessment is that we don`t have a problem with skill or talent but the problem we`ve always had in the team is unity of purpose.People remember that after the Chad game, there was some infighting and finger pointing that took place. If we noticed after the passing of Chaswe, the lads were focussed and united to deliver the result against BB and set aside any petty differences.Good job PP for bringing the best out of the lads and if we can build on such success, then the sky is the limit.FAZ should make sure that these boys are paid their dues for dying a liitle for mother Zambia.U 20 qualified and performed well at the WC,U23 on the verge of qualifying to the olympics,Chipolopolo COSAFA Champs and through to Ghana 2008,I think we`re back and if we adequately prepare then we`ll do well at AFCON and possibly qualify to 2011 WC.

  61. Mbesuma needs support and not salt in this time. Ever since his injury he has struggled to gain fitness. Even Englands David Beckam is suffering to get match fitness after the injury. So lets support the guy. He might seem over weight but the display he put out yesterday was exellent, actually the extra weigh helps him penentrate the slimy defenders without even commiting a foul!!. If you did not notice a lot of the S.A defence concerntrated on him and thereby leaving out Jacob and Chris. If you saw the first goals Mbesuma was tightly marked.
I am with Mbesuma, and understand that he needs to heal. And you will see more goals

  62. #72 I know that Zambia has beaten Bafana after 1997 but no victory has been as sweet as this. Remember, it took yesterday’s game to qualify zambia to AFCON 2008. This is the sweetest victory ever over Bafana Banyana.

All you talking crap about Mbesuma are what I can call “Soccer Mafikizolo” meaning you have just arrived on the soccer scene and it is therefor tough for you to understand soccer tactics. Mbesuma was yesterday used as a sacrificial lamb in order to free Katongo and it worked for us. I was evident that SA’s attention was on Mbesuma and Katongo punished them and Zambia as team won.

Those who do not like Mbesuma must die and go to hell because they do not belong here

Phiri is a good tactian and all u who did not give a chance have been made to eat humble pie.

  63. #87.I agree with you on this sweet revenge for the WC qualifier we lost in 1997 to BB.I`ve been waiting for this day for a long time now.I was there at FNB on that chilly afternoon.Like they say that he who laughs last laughs the longest.VIVA ZAMBIA VIVA CHIPOLOPOLO.

  64. Great result… the questions now turn to FAZ and the coaching issues. I know some Zambians will want PP to stay with the team in Ghana, but so many have been calling for an expatriate coach with “more experience”.. so what happens next?? Personally I think FAZ should go ahead with an expatriate coach. He will have a good team to work with and enough time to get used to the local game.

I also notice a lot of these people commenting were the same ones I was reading the other day disowning Zambia.. Come rain or shine we need to support our team.. not just when they win, but through the tough times as well. How can our team do well when they don’t have support from their own fans.

Leave Mbesuma alone, the guy did a great job yesterday.. in fact, the whole team did a great job. Thats why this is football not tennis. Its a team effort, everyone played their part. The team on the pitch, the bench, the coaching staff.

    Ghana ’08.. here we come

  65. Mbesuma is a good player leave him alone. Patrick litsens. We told him to bring everyone and he followed suit. My brothers let us keep putting pressure on Faz do bring the professionals.

  66. I AM SICK OF PORTSMOUTH MAKING JOKES ABOUT MBESUMA. I MIGHT SUE THEM SOON. MBESUMA NO LONGER PLAYS FOR THEM BUT I JUST READ AN ARTICLE WHERE THEY CALLED HIM THE BIG FLOP GOING TO THE NATIONS CUP. THOSE PORTSMOUTH FANS HAVE BEEN MAKING TO MAKING JOKES I AM THREATENING TO ATTACK IF THEY DONT LEAVE MBESUMA ALONE.

  67. Mbesuma is a good player but he has to instill self displine. I hope he has a good manager and advisor like reporting early for training. After all yesterday he did a good job by keep the BB defence busy as a result giving C. Katongo chance to score a harttrick. Sweet victory coupled with the qualification to CAN2008. Meanwhile Boys Germany women have been Argentia in FIFA WC in China 11:0.

  68. Who knows the results of Nkonkola stampage enquiry? As we celebrate this victory Zambia risk playing their games for 2010 WC qualifying matches in neigbouring countries. Burundi is already doing this. They played in Kigali yesterday against Egypt. Well we can start asking Tazania or Nambia for this service. I dont think the chinese can build a new stadium within 8 months. FAZ must be pushed on this one.

  69. 69 and 73 do not perhaps soccer tactics, mbesuma was as much active as the other players, his role was to draw the attention and concetration of nasief morris and aoroen mokoena there by living katongo ,chansa,j.mulenga and bakala into space. If mbesuma was not tightly marked he would have scored, look at the second goal, had katongo missed it, mbesuma was well positioned to score same was for bakala. You are not doing anygood by condeming mbesuma rather support and encourage him to regain his full prowess.viva chipolopolo

  70. Does Zambia honestly need a foreign coach?Let`s just send PP,Chicken George and Peter Kaumba for refresher courses in Europe and we should be fine.Clearly PP out thought and coached a world cup winning coach in the name of Parreira.

  71. Gents you cannot exclude Ntofotofo, the current three-pronged attack of Katongo, Mulenga and ‘FAT BOY’ is working very well. Mbesuma has unusual ability with the ball. For a man his size he moves amazingly quickly, his feet are fast and he is exceptionally good in the air. He isn’t only a brilliant finisher, he is a great support striker, and he showed that on Sunday. Because he’s not scoring truck-loads of goals, doesn’t maean he’s suffereing from a dip in form. You can’t keep up that kind of goal scoring rate forever, the man is human.

The key to our success on Sunday was our aerial prowess which has been lacking in recent years. Granted, they play entirely different positions but here’s an example: We had Elijah ‘Tolo’ Litana way back in the day, but know we have Jacob Mulenga who won a lot of balls in the air for Zambia, giving his fellow strikers and the mid-fielders the ball.

  74. Parreira disappointed by Bafana Bafana’s loss

    September 10, 2007, 06:00

Bafana Bafana coach, Carlos Alberto Parreira, says he is extremely disappointed by the performance of his team after yesterday’s 3-1 humiliation by Zambia in the final African Cup of Nations qualifier at Newlands in Cape Town.

South Africa went into the match still on top of Group 11, with 11 points. Zambia is second, on eight points. Despite the defeat, South Africa has still scraped into the Africa Cup finals in Ghana. Perreira says he is short of words to describe today’s dismal performance:

“We would like to keep our record of being unbeaten in this group and be the first one right away.

“But it did not happen; these are things which only football can explain. The first 25 minutes was a disaster, the unthinkable, we made mistake and made the life easy for them.”SABC NEWS.

  75. Parreira hails Benni for Bafana qualification goal

    September 10, 2007, 16:00

Bafana Bafana coach Alberto Parreira has been full of praise for his goal-scorer, Benni McCarthy despite Bafana Bafana’s drubbing by Zambia in a Cup of Nations qualifier yesterday.

Parreira said he told McCarthy that on his return the team played their worst game since then but congratulated him for scoring the all important qualifying goal which he described as a good thing. Despite their embarrassing 0-3 loss to Zambia in Cape Town at the weekend, Bafana Bafana managed to scrape through to next year’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Bafana Bafana needed just one point to qualify automatically. Zambia needed to win by two clear goals which they did. Had South Africa scored another goal, they would have topped the log. Both teams finished level on 11 points. But Zambia is on top because of their head to head goal difference. Congo Brazzaville is third with seven points and Chad finished fourth with two poi

  76. Soccer loving Zambians kindly ignore #97 FACT because he can`t stand that he lost money on his bet that Bafana would beat our own Chipolopolo and he`s also too high on ‘intenkwe’ and katata.VIVA ZAMBIA VIVA CHIPOLOPOLO.

  77. Don’t waste time trying to explain Mbesuma’s value to the team to people who have no idea about football. Players like Mbesuma are a rarity. In the Australian team, captain at the World Cup Mark Viduka was criticised the same way. Yet he is a class player who is actually used tactically to draw defenders. And when he gets an opportunity he scores crucial goals.

Lets keep this blog positive for Zambia. There is enough rubbishing of Mbesuma from Portsmouth as mentioned before. The same people calling him FAT and useless will be praising him when he scores a few important goals.

  78. I was one of the people who doubted we could win the game and I’m not ashamed of it. This was based on my assesment of the team’s performance in qualifiers against that of Bafana Bafana’s (even without Benni). This is just one win and we shouldn’t get way ahead of ourselves. Both teams have made it to the finals, SA as runners-up due to their goal/win advantage prior to the game. I am a Zambian football supporter but analyse games objectively. This common notion that we can wack SA anytime, anywhere is absurd, they made a lot of errors in the game and don’t forget that they easily make it to the AC and WC unlike us. The same people above who try label anyone who criticises the team can not bet their house on it am sure. It’s highly possible that our team (with the same line-up) could lose to Djibouti, Burundi or Chad next week -figure that! #14. is right, we just qualified bane!

  79. #103, GO TO HELL WITH DJIBOUTI, BURUNDI AND CHAD, THE TEAMS YOU SUPPORT. YOU ARE NOT EVEN A CHIPOLOPOLO SOCCER FAN CHIKALA.

  80. #103 Spot on.

Why do people always want everyone to think like them. We always like to dispite opposing views. own up and grow so that you can appreciate the other side of the face.

#103 is Zambian but not a myopic one. He sees issues as they stand.

We beat Bafana but we almost lost to Chad. Whats about that.

    Viva Zambia.

  81. Guys insults out.# 102 what we want is constructive criticism. If somebody says a certain player is rubbish that’s not building when the same player came to your rescue in the past.I totally disagree with you that we beat Bafana Bafana cos the made mistakes. Why didn’t the make the same mistakes against Chad,Congo even Scotland. They were just out played, under siege, the pressure was just too much that the cracked. If another team scores then you say it was a mistake that’s why the scored then i don’t know where your thinking is coming from. If Zambia did not attack would they have made the ‘mistakes’? I need an answer on this.
If your are an honest person you should know that Zambia currently has a better team than South Africa.Thats a fact.
With all the money, infrastructure and resources SA has the were supposed to be better than everybody in Africa. But they not i’m sure you know why.Give us that money, resources.Yes Zambia can still beat SA anytime anywhere.

  82. #103. KC
Your prediction was wrong because it was made on a wrong premise (the assesment of the team’s performance in qualifiers against that of Bafana Bafana’s (even without Benni).

FOOTBALL IS ABOUT, WHO PLAYS WELL ON THE DAY( NOT IN THE PREVIOUS GAMES)

    Viva Zambia

  83. #110 Thanks Billy-SA
Your name reminds me of our own Billy Mwanza. At independence stadium, every time he is in possession of the ball, the whole stadium goes like….”BIIIILLLLLLYYYYY!!!”

#107 Sibs-RSA, your thoughts are well put. Let us give credit where it is due. Zambia played well and they deserved to win. In any case, teams usually make mistakes when they are under pressure. So we mounted pressure on their home soil and broke their defence!!

The way forward should really be to focus on the Ghana 2008. Our intention should be to get the cup itself. We must be willing to spend, and spend well. Like we did with the under 20.

I beleive if we can concentrate on this one thing, the AFCON Cup 2008, we will surely deliver for zambia.
    Long Live Zambia

  84. # 103 your bravery in revealing your identity amounts to foolishness. Why cant you be happy that Zambia won? Are you Zambian? Anyone can lose if it is not there day. Brazil can lose to Chad or Burundi if it isn’t there day but the probability of that happening is low. The same applies to Zambia. Man be happy what is wrong with you? I am begining to suspect that you are from SA and you are trying to invade this blog.

  85. Guys keep blogging you are really providing thorough entertainment. They are some very interesting things being said.Anyway I hope the Brondby management are aware of Katongo’s exploits because we as Zambian’s do not want to see our captain on the bench. Furthermore, I think Clifford Mulenga has stayed too long in the Mvela league he needs to move. Finally, I think we should consider Billy and Nketani as our number 1 defenders. Tana and Sichone may be old now. We could still call them but put them on the bench. I think Billy and Kenedy are for 2010.

  86. I agree with #112,113. There is nothing constructive about #103’s contribution. He thinks we won by fluke. If he is a true Zambian, he cannot sink so low and compare Zambian football to that of Djibouti.Pliz do not spoil our celebrations. You deserve insults.

  87. Congrats to the U23. They still top their group and on course to the Olympic games next year.We should build on this team for 2010 and beyond.

  88. #110 Thanks Billy for you kind words.

#114 I totally agree with you on the need for Clifford to move away from the Mvela league. That is not where his class belongs he needs a move away from their for good of his career and for better of Zambian football. The boy is magnificently talented but his statue (according to his interview with fifa during under-20 world cup) is working against him.

Did Zambia win by fluke or by plan? The resounding answer is “by plan”.

Lets not listen to what the SA technical team is saying (that they gifted us with goals). To be frank bafana was in trouble from the 5th minute of the game and they cracked under pressure and we capitalised on the weakness. If we are not good enough we would not score those goals. Remember, you can not say you give us goals when its us who scored them shame.

SA just admit, you underated us and we shocked you. period

However, blog contributors please lets be civil and avoid insults and lets tolerate opposing views.

  89. What happened on sunday is a total anhilation of Bafana Banyana by Chipolopolo. This is a sweet victory for mother Zambia and it will be cherished for a long time to come (at least by me. They have a good coach but no players and it shows that money can buy you a good doctor but not health.

  90. Thanx Kemps #118. Forgive us for going out of the way.I wish the Chipololopolo guys all the best. GRZ should support FAZ financially in order to prepare adequately for Ghana 2008. Preparations should start now becoz it is less than 4 months away to CAN 2008. I call upon all sooccer loving Zedians to keep on supporting our lads. The impossible will be done…parading the CAN 2008 trophy on Cairo road. VIVA chipolopolo….

  91. I agree that Billy Mwanza and Kennedy Nkhetani should be considered as our central defensive pairing. Yes, Sichone and Tana have served Zambia well in the past, but let’s not play names, let’s play players who are in form.

I’d like to criticise the boys for one thing however. The back four were playing very deep at times, I don’t know if that was tactical or not. Some points in the first half they were stretched along the edge of our own box, which was inviting danger.

  92. The real KC says chi no. 103 nichi impersonator. He/she knows nothing about soccer analysis.Zwa chi impersonator. How many times are we going to change our ID’s??Ok. Nomba na chinja ID, ninebo KCC

  93. #119 SHUP UP
You couldn’t have said it any better: “parading the CAN 2008 trophy on Cairo road”!!! Man, i look forward to that day.
I am sure some of you are busy making fun of this. But you are the same people who made fun of us when we were telling you that we will beat RSA!!!!

  94. Posted to the web 11 September 2007

THERE could have been foul-play in the football match between Zambia and South Africa. South Africa’s Bafana-Bafana probably decided that Zambia beats them so as to make it difficult for the Uganda Cranes to qualify for the Nations Cup finals.

This is probably why Kaizer’s Club Chiefs were until Wednesday insisting that Uganda’s star David Obua was unfit to play in the Uganda vs Niger match.

Obua was quoted to have said: “They (Kaizer chiefs) are not convinced that I am ready (healed) and want me to stay. But if I am not released by Wednesday (three days to the game), then I will forcefully come on Thursday because for me, the Niger match will be the biggest in my football career.”

This showed that Obua’s South Africa-based club (Kaizer Chiefs) was not prepared to have Obua play for his country because he posed a big threat to their scheme.

Why were Obua’s bosses insisting that he had not yet healed when he persistently said his thigh injuries had healed and he was fit for his nation’s international duty?

This raises suspicion that there was conspiracy between Bafana-Bafana and Zambia that led to the 1-3 score. For South Africa to be walloped by Zambia at home is unbelievable.

Another unpleasant scenario was the controversial penalty the Senegalese referee awarded to Bafana-Bafana denied Uganda entrance to the pervious Nations Cup finals. A second incident was when Cranes’ goal was cancelled in a first leg with The Eagles in Nigeria.

Last month, Uganda’s national coach Csaba appealed to the Confederation of African Football Association (CAF) to fix the Uganda Cranes’ qualifier against Niger on the same day with that between South Africa and Zambia, but was not taken into account.

Csaba might have smelt the rat long before and indeed it happened.

Cranes players also stand to blame for squandering chances. They messed us up in the first 45 minutes when they missed targets inside the net. Players like Massa fired three open shots over the crossbar to squander Cranes chance of qualifying straight away. Imagine what the situation would be had the first penalty kick gone outside!

The Saturday match should be a lesson to the Cranes to sharpen their attacking force and look for goals early.

  95. #109 Thanks for your point, yes I was wrong in my prediction. That is what life and football is all about. The likes of you and Kemps are not only mature but what we need to have positives debates and analysis.
To #121, I was unaware of your name and have thus changed to the above. KC is not a pseudonym but my initials.
For the record I am a through and through supporter of Zambian soccer, I have been following Zambian football way back from the 70s when my father once served as Rokana’s Chairman when the Bernard Chandas ruled. I refuse to drawn into debates of insults. Those who know me here know how pationate I am about all our 4 teams. I refuse to be drawn into debates of insults.

Coming back to the game, we deserved to win period! When I say BB made a lot of errors that doesn’t amount to saying we won by a fluke, NO, we capitalised on them. I just pray we stay consistent in this kind of approach, going for the kill. The AC is next year!!!

  96. KC We need different opinions for sure but in terms of criticism we need constructive criticism. We will never always agree cos we different and we read the game differently.I also admire your honesty cos the rest of the few guys that doubted that we would win haven’t come up to say i was wrong. At the end of the day we all Zambians we should all aim to build the team whether we criticize or support.

  97. Sibs-RSA, totally agree. We are all Zambians regardless, and like you say I will always never shy away from an opinion or point unlike others (who may be the same ones hurling insults under a different name). Viva Zambia!
