ZABS withdraws over 11,000 containers of Lyons Peanut Butter

The Zambia Bureau of Standards has seized over 11, 000 by 1 liter containers of Lyons peanut butter from various shops in Lusaka valued at approximately over K357,000.

ZABS Head of Marketing and Public Relations Hazel Zulu said the products have been confined because the laboratory test results received indicated that the peanut butter failed on one critical parameter known as aflatoxins.

Mrs. Zulu has since assured the public that the Bureau will conduct countrywide surveillance inspections and withdraw the product from the market until such a time that the manufacturer is able to demonstrate that the product is compliant with the Zambian Standard, ZS 723 for peanut butter.

  1. Well done ZABS. This peanut butter is tasty & nutritious but contains plenty of sand. Next, please confiscate Mpulungu Kapenta, some rice, some dried fish like Luangwa whose processors have taken consumers for a ride. In this era people are still stealing from others by deliberately adding sand & stones to the food so that it can weigh more & make more money.

  2. Lyons is a British colonial Brand. They would not sell such in UK, so the standards in the factories that produced those must be poor because their idea us that they can sell dangerous products.
    HOMEMADE PEANUT BUTTER-recipe
But having said that Zambians need to buy Local and home. No Zambian should be buying a foreign brand. Recipe for ‘Chiponde,’ which I got from Allegra McEvedy’s book, a l ovely UK Lass who got the recipe on her travels in Malawi. For A Small Jar of Peanut Butter. 1). 150g/5oz Salted slightly roasted Peanuts:- (put nuts in pan with a little salted water, shake the pan about on hot stove until dried out). OR if you have electric oven and not on power cut(!), put nuts with salt on flat baking tray and roast for 15 -25 minutes or as required until Golden…

    • Golden Brown. Remove outer skins 2). blend if power is on or point in African pounder until desiccated in very small bits. 3). add in about 4 tablespoons of warm water and blend/pound until it forms into one mass. 4). Put into bowl and taste for salt, add more to taste if necessary. If needed you can add 2 extra tablespoons of warm water if you like to loosen to right consistency. Transfer to a small sterilised glass jar (recycle your store bought jam jars etc and boil in hot water for 30 mins to sterilise). 5). Shake/tap the jar gently, close the jar with lid and put into Fridge preferably or if out in a cool cupboard, make sure to consume within week keeping lid tightly shut after each use. Period.

    • If stored in the fridge, can last weeks if not kept at different temperatures(as in power cuts).

  3. When are you going to hit these firms with a hefty fine…who is paying for transportation of all this contaminated product…whatever happened to the Zambeef debacle everything just faded away and it was back to bussiness.

  4. if only ZABS’s mandate can also be extended to withdraw and destroy poor leadership in government.

  5. AFLATOXIN IS A CHEMICAL SUBSTANCE WHICH IS FOUND IN GROUNDNUTS AND GROUNDNUTS PRODUCTS STORED UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS. THIS CHEMICAL COMPOUND CAUSES CANCER OF THE LIVER. MAY ALL THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE EATEN THESE PRODUCTS FOR A WHILE NOW RUSH TO THE CANCER DISEASES HOSPITAL TO GET TESTED FOR LEVELS OF AFLATOXIN ONCOGENS. AN EPIDEMIC OF CANCER OF THE LIVER MIGHT BE IN THE WAITING.

  6. Well done ZABS .we hope you can check the quality of building material, we have on the market as well.

  7. ZABS should go beyond peanut butter. Very large stocks of motor car head lamps, halogen bulbs made in china are being dumped on the zambian market. These bulbs have an ectremely short service life. Usually burning out as soon as they are lit by popping and blowing out. Their service life is so short that bulbs burn out quickly and when list expected and at night possibly endangering lives of both motor vehicle owners and other road users. ZABS in liason with RATSA should investigate matter and stop the sales of these bulbs which have been dumped on the market in thusands. They are a danger to road users.

  8. Zambians never learn jayjay, they are a pain in the bottom. Indeed what happened to that Zambeeef saga where, poisons where discovered in the matumbo beef imported from here? What about the GMO foods we are consuming everyday and even more in the chibuku brew? Little wonder today, even babies have blood pressure, shame…

  9. Thought they never existed. What about second hand underpants from Europe and substandard products from China?

  10. Utu ma nicker natu mabamba pa salaula abantu balapwa ku mpele shabasungu. ZABS come to our aid.

  11. Very interesting development!! I saw it coming! The matter is not really about aflatoxins. Aflatoxins are naturally found in peanut butter and the safe level in around 12 parts per billion. Zimbabwe peanut butter has about 10 parts per billion and is very safe and conforms to international standards. Where it is manufactured in Zimbabwe an independent tests are done to verify the levels. The Zambian issue here is about retaliatory trade tactics – Zimbabwe banned imports from Zambia in April 2016 and this is sweet revenge – but the Zimbabwe peanut butter remains safe.

ZNFU carried out this article titled Zambia Prepares To Restrict Importation Of Key Products From Zimbabwe posted on August 29, 2016 in which <blockquote cite=" http://www.znfu.org

  12. in which

Ministry of Commerce Trade and Industry convened a stakeholders meeting on Thursday, 25th August 2016 to consult on possible options for government to counter the banning of Zambian exports into Zimbabwe. … Going forward, Government of the Republic of Zambia will implement measures to retaliate against the banning of Zambian exports by Zimbabwe.
