THE Zambia National Teachers Union (ZNUT) has welcomed the suspension of five male teachers at Kasama Girls Secondary School as investigations into sexual abuse allegations advance.

ZNUT deputy general secretary David Banda said the move was necessary to allow for smooth investigations to take place and also to avoid interference with the process.

Mr Banda said the union supported the investigations and was hopeful of a thorough job being done.

“As a teachers union, we are disturbed by the alleged happenings at Kasama Girls School and we support the investigations into the matter. If any of our teachers is found wanting, we will not hesitate to see to it that they are prosecuted for not abiding by the rules,” Mr Banda said.

He said the teachers found guilty of the sex allegations would be dismissed from service.
Meanwhile Pillars of Peace Zambia has said that there was need for the Ministry of Education to intensify investigations in the matter as well as monitor the conduct of the school managements around the country so that issues affecting pupils could be addressed.

Pillars of Peace Zambia chairperson Lombe Chibesakunda said students that were taught at Zambian schools were an important human capital to the country’s future and therefore should not be neglected.

Ms Justice Chibesakunda said that Zambia was governed by the rule of Law and Christianity core values, governing aspects that needed to be protected by every citizen.

She said that no one was above the law.

Ms Justice Chibesakunda said the reported sexual abuse at Kasama Girls was criminal and it should not go unpunished.

Northern Province Minister Brian Mundubile on Tuesday said that five male teachers, a cook and a guard at Kasama Girls had been suspended to ensure smooth investigations into the alleged sex abuse.

  1. This is contrary to what the Provincial Education Officer told the nation. What was he trying to hide? Investigate him as well and suspend him too.

  4. Evidence not enough to stand nothing will happen to these teachers. Mind you even teachers are abused by the same pupils. PEO must be checked thoroughly these are the guys who require hanging by the tongue what is he hiding is he one of them?….

  5. This is unethical on part of the teachers. I think the one who was protecting these people must be questioned because he lied to the nation. My advice to pupils is that they should uphold to their principles its disheartening to hear these stories. There is too much moral decay in society today. I doubt if nowadays you can marry a virgin. To teachers who are behaving worse than animals please respect yourselves.
