Reports about looming fuel shortage are false, energy PS

Government says Zambia has sufficient fuel stocks to last until next month contrary to media reports that a shortage is looming.

Energy Permanent Secretary, Peter Mumba, says the story in the Wednesday edition of the Post Newspaper, suggesting that Zambia will soon run out of fuel is false.

He says it is also not true that a tanker carrying crude oil for Zambia was recently diverted to India.

Mr. Mumba told Journalists at a press briefing in Lusaka that the ship which was scheduled to arrive in Dar es Salaam on June 15 will be delayed due to bad weather.

He said the ship will instead dock on June 18.

Mr. Mumba urged the public not to panic saying the country has sufficient fuel to last until next month.

He said serious efforts are being made to ensure that the country does not experience a shortage of fuel.

  1. Peter Mumba, is it also not true that Senanga and Nakonde districts are currently experiencing fuel shortages? How many times have we experienced shortages and how many times have you and Energy Minister been quoted along the same lines of re-assurance to Zambians not to panic? Maybe you actually ask us to panic, who knows, because it always turns out to be true about fuel shortages once the alarm like this comes! C’m on people we cannot be mediocres in every sphere!!!!!!

  2. This is not the first time that peter is denying that there is a roaming fuel shortage. we are watching you.

  3. Come on, Mr Mumba. One month’s worth of fuel in reserve for the whole country is not enough. We should be keeping fuel in stock to last at least 3 months.

  4. Ama Guys mu Boma Boza yeka. Last time there was talk of exporting surplus fuel to other countries but today Petulu Mutmba is denying the truth as reported by the POST. These guys in boma having specialised in refuting the truth even after tribunals they still dont own up. Ba PS there is no smoke without fire. From Mumba statement one can conclude that there is a looming shortage of fuel. The ship carrying crude oil will dock at port on 18/06/09 instead of 15/06/09 due to bad weather. Meaning no ships will be docking at Port of Dar es Salaam. Have we got any independent confirmation of bad weather at sea in Tanzania. All statement is a big lie. Amen

  5. If there is a shortage due to bad weather then is it the govt’s fault?

  6. Nice so far, but how about that promise to resign move if there will truly be a shortage news in the tabloids?

Slowly, democracy is being understood nicely in Zambia as people are now willing to resign when they fail to deliver – thank you late LPM and Dora for giving us the lead.
