ZNFU deeply disturbed by farmers who are selling their produce for a song

Farmers rebagging their maize at Kamuswazi Satellite depotThe Zambia National Farmers’ Union (ZNFU) is deeply disturbed by farmers who have resorted to selling maize at K50 per 50kg bag and soya beans at K80 per 50kg bag and has called on them to be patient.

Speaking when he met District Farmers Associations (DFAs) of Western Province in Kaoma yesterday, April 11, 2017, ZNFU president Jervis Zimba said he is disappointed at the desperation by some farmers who are being cheated out of their produce by briefcase buyers. He said such levels of desperation could even see farmers exchanging their produce for salaula (second hand clothes).

“ZNFU understands that this year will be full of challenges because prices will be poor. This is because Government has continued interfering in the marketing of agriculture produce, especially maize. The 10% tax on maize exports is affecting farmers badly. Then we have grain levies by council, we also have toll fees … this season farmers will make nothing,” Mr. Zimba said.

  1. Znfu are ignorant dogs who need to be put down just like lungu. What you are meant to be doing is finding out why people are so desperate. From that question you will find that people are suffering under this illegal government with high costs of living. So you expect these people to be patient while their children starve while you drive around in latest suvs. Please go phuck off and take that sick rat lungu with you

  2. Agriculture in Zambia is a far cry from KK’s “Lima Programme”.
Cheap food translates to a HAPPY POPULATION
    When will politicians realise this
Zambia, with fertile soil and abundant water, is best poised to feed the entire Suthern Africa region
    Agricultural export can replace copper
In addition, agriculture will be in the hands of Zambians…MINING IS NOT

  3. Ag minister said recently that e system for inputs will replace fisp but farmers should be using their own money for in puts. So they have to sell so they have money directive from govvt. Zimba are we really having a bumper crop tjis year as ministry says and inputs will be deliverd in june.. is that june 2017 l or 2018

  4. PLEASE I URGE ALL FARMERS TO HOLD THEIR PRODUCE AND NEVER SELL YOUR MAIZE OR SOYA BEANS TO THE SO CALLED FRA. BETTER YOU SELL TO THE SO CALLED BRIEFCASE BUYERS OR MILLERS. THIS GOVERNMENT IS EATING YOUR LABOR DOUBLE LIVING YOU WITH NOTHING AND IN POVERTY WHEN THEM GET RICHER AND RICHER EVERY DAY

  5. @Dilip Naik, actually that’s what led to KK ‘s downfall. Time came when he couldn’t subsidize the maize meal and when he increased the price from 4 kwacha to 6 kwacha all hell broke out.
