First Lady Esther Lungu has commended the National Legal Aid Clinic for Women for extending provision of its free legal services to rural areas.
Mrs Lungu said she is delighted that provision of legal aid services have been decentralized adding that the marginalised in society are now able to access legal representation.
ZANIS reports that the First Lady has since urged the National legal clinic to consider setting up more paralegal desks in all the districts in addition to the 69 desks that have been established in 39 districts in the country.
However, Mrs Lungu called for doubling of efforts in reducing the high numbers of gender based violence in the country.
She stated that the latest statistics released by the Zambia Police Service showed that in the first quarter of 2017, 5,464 gender based violence cases were reported as compared to 4,998 reported during the same quarter last year.
Mrs Lungu further said that 24 murder cases were related to gender based violence compared to 13 during the same period last year.
And speaking earlier Law Association of Zambia president Linda Kasonde disclosed that the National Legal Aid Clinic for Women has in the last four years represented over 4,000 women and children before the courts of law.
Ms Kasonde said that the legal clinic represents over 1,000 clients annually throughout the country in the courts of law and recorded a success rate of 80 per cent.
Meanwhile Head of Development Corporation at the Embassy of Sweden said his country is pleased to associate its self with the achievements the National Legal Aid Clinic for Women has attained.
