Do not make Zambia as a country escorting others at UN

Zambia should not be at the UN only as a country that is escorting other nations but that the country should take an active role in advancing its interests at the global body says newly appointed Ambassador Lazarous Kapambwe to UN.

Speaking when he addressed members of staff at the Mission, Amb. Kapambwe advised the diplomats to have a clear understanding of Zambia’s foreign policy if they are to  effectively represent the country at the UN.

He said it was important for Mission staff to understand Zambia’s priority areas in her foreign policy because only then would the staff perform their functions to the expectations of Zambians.

“For me it is home-coming. It is the third time I am coming back here and so this Mission is a special place for me. Let us work together and let us ensure that Zambia should not be a country that should be escorting other nations to the UN. We should understand Zambia’s foreign policy and ensure we protect the country’s interests. There is only one Zambia and we are all expected to be spokespersons for our country. We must endeavor to promote the country’s priority interests,” Amb Kapambwe said.

Amb. Kapambwe took time to share with Mission staff the challenges Africa is having in securing a permanent seat at the UN Security Council as well as on the Ezulwini Consensus on the demands for the reform of the Security Council.

He said it was important for Africa to understand the Ezulwin Consensus is a position on international relations and reform of the United Nations agreed by the African Union (AU).

The Ezulwini Consensus calls for a more representative and democratic Security Council, in which Africa, like all other world regions, should be represented.

Amb Kapambwe thanked his predecessor Dr Mwaba Kasese Bota for her service she rendered to the Mission and Zambia and commended the staff for keeping the Mission running.

ZAMBIA’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN Amb.r Lazarous Kapambwe arrived in New York to take up his position at the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Zambia to the United Nations with call on mission staff to work hard in promoting Zambia’s interests and foreign policy during their tour of duty.

This is Amb. Kapambwe’s second coming as Zambia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York but he also served at the Mission for the first time in 1987 as Counsellor.

He was first appointed Permanent Representative to the UN in 2007, and a decade later, he has returned to the Mission in the same capacity.

Amb. Kapambwe said there is only one Zambia and implored diplomats accredited to the Mission in New York to be the best spokespersons for Zambia in promoting the country’s interests at the United Nations.

And Charge’d’ Affaires and Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Christine Kalamwina said the Mission had been waiting for Amb Kapambwe for a long time and was happy that he has finally arrived.

This according to the press statement issued by the First secretary to the UN Wallen Simwaka

  1. Many Americans including many Chinese, Japanese, South Koreans and others believe in God. There are many African who believe in God who are far much better off than many people who speak against religion and I am not talking about false Prophets.

And if you very closely at things you will find that almost everyone on earth practices some form of religion. Find out what the definition of religion is and you will know better.

  2. Iyeeeeeee ..they keep on deceiving us saying God will help us…mean while they go on chartered jet and zoom off to waste tax payers money.

  3. Where are the pictures, Wallen Simwaka? Your predecessor, Silwamba was doing a good job of keeping us informed with pictures and good communication. He set the standard high. Let’s see how you gonna do?

  4. What is Zambia s foreign policy? Amb. Kapambwe wants the mission staff to familiarize themselves with Zambia s foreign policy and mentions NOTHING in it! Welcome back MMD. Out through the ballot box, in through the back door!
