An Italian construction company CMC Di Ravenna has been awarded a contract by the Zambian Government through the Road Development (RDA) to work on the Kabwe to Piccadilly Circus and the Mpula to Mansansa roads in Central Province.
CMC Di Ravenna will upgrade the Roads to bituminous standard of approximately 292km including 20km of Urban Roads in Mkushi and Kabwe in order to create an enabling environment to facilitate the easy movement of goods and services.
RDA Director and Chief Executive Officer Engineer Elias Mwape in a media statement said it has always been the intention of government through his Agency to construct the roads to bituminous standard in major farming blocks in Mkushi Area in order to support the agriculture industry.
Engineer Mwape said the funds for the project which will cover five rural roads will be facilitated by the Contractor through the Contractor Facilitated Initiative model of financing.

I once asked one American to cosier building some roads in Zambia. His answer was ” if you want good roads, ask the Chinese or the Italians. …..” I believe our government is on the right track. Let us give them maximum support to accomplish their programme.

Very reputable company. its a cooperative of Italian Civil engineers formed in the 1940s. It’s called Cooperativa Moritorium Cementis di Ravenna (CMC di Ravenna). Its HQ is in the city of Ravenna in Italy. They have done several civil works, in South Africa, Kenya, Mozambique and Asia – Laos. They are part of the Millennium Challenge Account constructing the 23 km Lusaka concrete drainage. I think funding will most likely come from the European union. They have one weakness. I will bring their italian abusive engineers, Phillipino technicians and supervisors, south africans formers and employ Zambians as ba chibombebombe. with managers getting as little as K9pin. 292 Kilometres but the report is silent on the contract amount. And does does everything have to be bituminous? Zambia is becoming a regional leader in the production of cement and surely some thought must be applied to construction some of these roads in concrete or concrete interlocking pavers which has the added advantage of being labour intensive and would help in reducing unemployment. Are our engineer’s asleep to the use of concrete?
NO. OUR ENGINEERS ARE NOT SLEEPING. THERE’S A ZAMBIAN COMPANY CALLED ANDOSA, IF I AM NOT MISTAKEN THAT HAS BEEN DEMONSTRATING THE USE OF WHAT YOU HAVE MENTIONED. MOST ROADS IN THE UK AND ETHIOPIA HAVE BEEN MADE AS YOU HAVE MENTIONED, THE COMPANY DEMONSTRATED, I THINK ON ZAMBIAN TV.
BUT, MAYBE RDA WOULDN’T GET ANYTHING FOR THEIR POCKETS FROM SUCH RECOMMENDATIONS.

I was nearly shocked when I read the headline I thought RDA has handed out a contract fairly (and not to Chines) until I read this…what model of financing is this tell the people about figures involved.

I have seen huge highways in south africa made out of concrete. They do not develop potholes however they are a bit noisier than tarmac

Roads especially highways in England have a concrete underlay on some urban roads there are historic stone blocks underneath…there are solutions calming or reducing noise like planting specific trees on the sides..am sure there are rubber properties they also incorporate to the bitumen to reduce the traffic noise.
Yes one highway down here is appropriately named the concrete highway. And it was made in the 80s

Comment: these are daily projects the Government is undertaking but greatful that they have atleast informed the nation who is doing what.under the pf regime we expirienced for the very first time toll gates in Zambia. these gates have been amassing great income that if fly over bridges were to commence in busy towns like Lusaka,it wouldn’t be a Surprising factor. this is more than we ever thought of, street lights are every day feeling the streets, this is not a job for a ten point planner but for the unlimited patriotic front…I’m breaker a transcendent and i approve this message

What about the busy Turnpike, Mazabuka, Monze highway leading to 3 borders – Vic falls, Kazungula & Katima Mulilo? Kazungula Sesheke road is a big disgrace – considering all those toll gates! Soon truckers are going to strike and block your roads.

You have a BIG points there Jansi. We have limited thinking capacity as Africans. Look at the likes of Za Yellow spotting a US flag but still emancipated by slave ideas. He thinks The T1 and T2 major export roads to the Southern African countries and ports are for the Tonga speaking people only! Now imagine you have a few integral people in government who would think like that? The you have what is simply termed as arrested development through petty and archaic thinking. Have you seen the number of trucks using these two major routes ferrying copper and other goods so that your children can eat? Those roads you are using in America are built for America. Get off your backside and come to Zambia and put your money where your mouth is. Sha!
