Zambia’s Charge’ d’Affaires at the Embassy in Washington D.C. Joseph Chilaizya says Zambia will foster economic diplomacy with the United States of America in order for the country to receive the best from President Donald Trump’s administration.
Mr. Chilaizya says the U.S.A remains Zambia’s biggest bilateral partner through programmes in education and health.
He says Zambia has benefited a lot through programmes such as the President’s Emergency Plan For AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) which is a United States government initiative to address the global HIV/AIDS epidemic and help save the lives of those suffering from the disease, primarily in Africa.
Mr. Chilaizya, has also disclosed that the Jewish community in the USA has approached the Zambian Mission in Washington D.C seeking to invest in Zambia.
He says following President Edgar Lungu’s recent visit to Israel early this year most Israeli companies in America have earmarked Zambia for investment, especially in agriculture and manufacturing sectors.
“I am glad that as His Excellency President Lungu comes for the United Nations General Assembly in New York in September next month, the Jewish community in America has overwhelmingly approached the embassy to indicate their participation at an Investment Forum which will be held on the sidelines of the summit.
“Agriculture an important economic activity in Zambia. African has been projected to undergo a seven year drought period especially the Southern part of the continent. But Zambia hosts 40 per cent of water in the region, therefore agriculture will remain the main stay of Zambia’s economy,” he said.
Mr. Chilaizya said this when Chienge Constituency Member of Parliament Given Katuta paid a courtesy call on the Zambian Embassy in Washington D.C.
Ms. Katuta is in the USA on an International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) sponsored by U.S Embassy in Zambia in conjunction with the State Department.
Cabinet Office Decentralisation Secretariat Director Mr. Alfred Sakwiya and Local Authorities Superannuation Fund Public Relations Manager Chishimba Milongo are also part of the programme.
Meanwhile, Ms. Katuta says Luapula province is poised for massive investment in areas such as agriculture, mining, and hydropower.
She also disclosed that an Indonesian company is set to construct a rail line that will link the province with Tanzania through Nakonde border.
