Baby dumping condemned

Share

The Zambia Widows Network Association (ZAWNA) has strongly condemned women dumping their newly born babies in pit latrines and other places.

Association president Florence Mwewa told ZANIS in an interview that baby dumping is inhuman and unacceptable.

Mrs. Mwewa said every child, regardless of circumstances surrounding their conception, has a right to life.
She said women involving themselves in unprotected sex should be ready to face the consequences.

“As women we all know the outcome of unprotected sex. It is either you contract sexually transmitted diseases or you fall pregnant,” she said.

Mrs. Mwewa cited the failure to uphold Christian values as a contributing factor to the alarming trend of baby dumping.
She pointed out that if people upheld Christian values, baby dumping would not be entertained.

Mrs. Mwewa however advised women thinking of dumping their babies to take them to orphanages and other organizations such as the Zambia Widows Network Association where such children would be looked after.

Meanwhile, the Senior Citizens Association in Zambia (SCAZ) has said baby dumping is a sign that a growing number of young women do not respect human life.

Association Chairperson, Isabel Sibongo, said sex should be restricted to married couples to avoid ills such as baby dumping.

Ms Sibongo said she strongly suspected that most of the babies dumped were born out of wedlock.

And Jethro Mweetwa, a member of the Senior Citizens Association in Zambia, charged that men are also to blame for baby dumping.

Mr. Mweetwa said this is because some men use their financial muscle to take advantage of women and impregnate them but later deny responsibility.

“Men should not take advantage of other people’s children by impregnating them and later deny ever knowing such women,” he said.

Mr. Mweetwa said men should be responsible enough to accept the results of having casual and unprotected sex.

On Monday, two live babies were dumped in pit latrines in Lusaka’s Chaisa compound and Chilenje. The babies have since died.

  1. Please keep those little ones, they are the leaders of tomorrow. They will also help to increase our population since population is now considered an assert to any nation. The larger the population the larger the market for industrial products.

If our women do not need children, let them use contraception – condoms, family planning pills etc. Men should also stand up to their responsibility of supporting their own blood.

  2. The greatest shame in this is that innocent babies are dumped resulting in their deaths. Why do people not appreciate the need for condoms or other family planning methods? Once caught, both the mothers and the fathers of these children need to be punished severely

  3. These pipo need to be educated about safe SEX, they want to sleep around, but dont want to keep the babies, wHy,

  4. IF YOU DONT WANT A CHILD STOP SLEEPING AROUND-YOU JUST KILL AN INNOCENT CHILD AT AN EXPENSE OF YOUR PROSTITUTION;BAD MANNERS YOU MURDERERS SAFE TRIP TO HELL-welai at how as well as daisy ama quite guyz why?ba kapoko na ba broken hill gelabo tamuleumfwika chili shani

  5. They 4get that after dumping the baby HIV will still follow them wherever they go. They have cursed themselves. The wages of sin is DEATH. Their end will be bad. May the souls of the babies RIP.

  6. a bit too obviuos , how did it find its way into the news? We all know, its wrong to dump babies, did she have any specific examples?

  7. #8, watch Muvi TV if you are in Zed and will be saddened by the pictures. No one has the right to take away life. This will haunt them for the rest of their lives and will always wonder what their child would have been in future……………….President.

  8. I hope that God will only forgive, what if they cant have any kids when the right time comes?
    This is very sad indeed.

  9. There is nothing wrong with these women dumping children if they just got pickep by some men for quick bucks. To them its a burden to fend for them. I dont know why pipo are surprised these things have bin going on from human creation. In fact given the problem of street kids, these women are curtailing future problems in their buds. The ones to be condemed are those guys who **** them for quick bucks, “The rules PAY ME CASH AND OFFER U A SERVICE ANY STYLE WITH NO OBLIGATIONS” WHAT ARE PIPO TALKING ABOUT. aborting and dumping of unwanted kids is normal for women”

  10. Too much bu hule , get married and then have children . This generation of young people is probably the worst ever that are not worth the sweat of a hog’s back. It’s not even about sexual education it’s just simple nyele outweighing common sense. Grown men and women get married to have children , it’s the young minds who have children because of lust. Abortions and single parents have become the norm because of lack of morals. Some of these women think by getting pregnant they can form a lasting relationship with you.

  11. #20 Woman of ntwanekane, what options anso? If you cant keep the baby, dont do the ntwenu. Simple and straight forward!

  12. #Ba Moze, ntwenu is everyone’s entitlement and privilege!. In a lackluster economy like Zambia women have to do extremes to survive, there is no security in Zambia, period.

  13. #22,Woman of Substance, lets not use ntwenu as an excuse!! Ati shani? Its everyones entitlement? Since when? I must be living on a different planet! That as it may be, what happened to responsibility wher ntwenu is concerned? Condoms? Hello!!! There we go again. Blame it on us men…as usual!

  14. Oh man!how sad that this happens 2 such innocent lives, all tv,radio stations should broadcast more educational programes on safe sex.leaders speak 2 the generation.youth all over should really know the consequences of unprotected sex,and if both parent of the child can go on probation.such sad news,we cannot keep feeling up orphanages and dropin centers, cause its not a easy job dealing with daily needs.God bless all the orphanage and dropin center all over zambia

  15. Orphanages raise institutionalized children which is not a conventional or effective way for children to grow up.

Extended family is a strong thing in our culture. Zambia should strive to place orphaned children with relatives and offer support to the relatives for the extra load. That way orphaned children will still have love and nurturing from family, something not found in an orphanage.

  16. This makes very sad reading indeed. Women in Zed should be given options. We want to mantain that such atrocities in Zed don’t happen and when they come to light we say Zed is a christian nation, murderers, hoochie mamas, too young to have sex… Times are changing, and Zed is not immune to these changes. We don’t know what leads to these acts. But am sure if you sat these girls down, they certainly have a story to tell. Nobody is born a monster, circumstances change people. This is a man’s problem as much as it is a womans problem.

  17. In certain circumstances women can not negotiate safe sex. It is very sad that this happens and I wonder what the women involved tell their friends and family as to where the child they were pregnant with went. Also lets not forget that due to the economic situation in the country, contraceptives are not always available or attainable.

  18. fi shetani, fi satana,fi devil-shame on u.y kill innocent sweet babies.some people have tried for babies without succes and u kill.such people must be stoned coz it seems jail isnt enough

  19. Baby dumping is the symptom of

    1. Bad governance
    2. Corruption
    3. Structural Violence
    4. Poverty

It is economically viable for a poor country like Zambia to rectify the root cause than venturing into what we cannot sustain without donor funding.

  20. Following “On Monday, two live babies were dumped in pit latrines in Lusaka’s Chaisa compound and Chilenje. The babies have since died“, I am sad to lear of this loss and may the babies rest in peace. Condolences also to the bereaved irresponsible parents and may the law take its course over them.

On “Association Chairperson, Isabel Sibongo, said sex should be restricted to married couples to avoid ills such as baby dumping“, this is the ideal case, but now that morals and love have broken loose especially due to the failure by the MMD GRZ to provide jobs and social services to Citizens, what is the best thing to do?

    Vote wisely!

  21. i agree wth # 17.so da only solution we have is to regaliz abortion this will lessen the number of street kids en will spend less on orphanages!!!!!!!

  22. 44 Wrong No. greetings. I have noted your “It is economically viable for a poor country like Zambia to rectify the root cause than venturing into what we cannot sustain without donor funding” and it makes sense with your enumerated symptoms in being similar to my submission.

Have a blessed day and keep well.
