11 people feared dead after two boats capsize

Share

Eleven people are feared dead after their boats capsized on Lake Bangweulu. The incident occurred in the early hours of yesterday when two boats carrying a team of fishermen was allegedly hit by a strong wave on the lake.

Samfya Acting District Commissioner, Godfrey Zimba, confirmed to ZANIS that initial reports reaching his office indicate that the accident occurred between Mbabala and Chishi Islands.

“It appears the group consisted of fishermen trying to catch ‘Chisense’ when they were overwhelmed by the waves that led their boats to capsize and subsequently drown them,” he said.

Mr. Zimba regretted that some fishermen have continued to disregard the advice by authorities, urging them to avoid getting on the waters to fish when the weather is not conducive.

He said his office is awaiting a comprehensive brief over the incident in which more people are feared dead.

Mr Zimba said a report is being awaited on the number of bodies retrieved so far.

  1. Are n`t these the same boats procured for the `keep zambia` campaign which someone said such incidents were looming?

God help us with these Chinese boats

  2. Occupational Hazard. People need to eat. Thats why they are risking their lives to go out on choppy waters. I hope their bodies will be recovered for a decent burial.

  3. The rivers have claimed so many lives lately. Do we even have Zambian marines or coastguard to cruise on patrol? Nangu fye ni Baywatch takwaba?

  4. If my memory keeps me well, this must be the third fatal incident in the waters of the Lake Ban’. Authorities need to tighten rules and regulation for going deep water fishing. MTSRIP.

  5. I am hoping they survived, but may the souls of those that died rest in peace.

  6. People from Luapula should learn to do other things, not just fising, sorry fishing! You can’t have witchcraft and fishing as a proffession. Shame!

  7. # 11, ISALA AKANWA IWE, why does it always have to be attributed to witchcraft?? that could have been caused by sudden change of the weather. Your selfish GRZ has’nt taken development to the area so how do you expect people to diversify proffessionally- thats their means of survival.

  8. Christ is coming soon. Them that die in him, dont die but sleep. for he is not the God of the dead but of the living. Let them rest in him.

  9. MWANA MFUMU: By letting these guys sit on their hands and waiting on the Govt to change their of life won’t help. From one generation to another, they spend 12 hours on the lake, where are their toilets? all that in the name of catching chisense? They eat Yucca root day in day out, use witchcraft for protection should that be the Govt’s problem? What are those chiefs doing? Soon the whole province will be full of blind people, but still waiting on the Govt.Tukofwako!

  10. #12: You have your facts wrong! these guys are just backward. How can you live for ever without toilets; but waiting for the Govt to do it for you? they spend 12 hours on the lake in the name of catching chisense, where are their toilets? Soon the whole province will be full of blind people. Let the local leaders open their eyes not the Govt.
