Vera Tembo speaks against illegal charcoal burning, forest encroachment

The Ministry of Tourism, Environment and Natural Resources has expressed grave concern over the continued encroachment in Forestry Reserves.

Ministry of Tourism, Environment and Natural Resources Deputy Minister, in charge of Environment, Vera Tembo says if the practice is not checked, water catchment areas would be devastated.

Ms. Tembo was speaking yesterday after a tour of Forest Reserve N0.69 in Kafue where it was discovered that there is unauthorized construction of residential houses in the Forest Reserve and charcoal burning is going on unabated.

The Deputy Minister and Forestry officials confiscated charcoal from those producing it without licenses.

Ms. Tembo warned against illegal charcoal production and called upon local authorities to work with the Forestry department in ensuring that no one settled in the forest reserve.

She said the Ministry of Tourism, Environment and Natural Resources will soon be devising measures to make communities play a role in policing forest reserves in the country in order to control illegal charcoal burning and encroachment.

  1. Good environmental move, but why confiscate charcoal when the damage has already been done?

  2. Finally, Ms D. Minister Vera Tembo (Chiluba?) has spoken out. It would have been nice if her voice can be heard also in Parliament. As for “The Deputy Minister and Forestry officials confiscated charcoal from those producing it without licenses“, it is impressive that her job description now includes confistication of property.

The funny part is that it appears like overstepping in duties of one is slowly becoming the order of the day under the MMD GRZ.

On “… Vera Tembo says if the practice is not checked, water catchment areas would be devastated“, how is this going to happen?

    Have a blessed day all.

  3. It should not just end at charcoal burning. Land use change even in the form of agriculture can be harmful to the environment. That is why you should weigh your push for jatropha growing because not only is it uncertain in terms of profits but it has huge socio-economic issues ranging from competition for land for food crops thence food security, environmental issues around it as it would rely on fertilisers which would add oxides of nitrogen and apart from that we are yet to have a say on what type of vehicles would take the biodiesel thereof since we do not know for whom the biofuel is; I mean are flexi-tech yet let alone we struggle even to make wheelburrows.

  4. On: “Ms. Tembo was speaking yesterday after a tour of Forest Reserve N0.69 in Kafue where it was discovered that there is unauthorized construction of residential houses in the Forest Reserve and charcoal burning is going on unabated”. It is really sad to see that it had to take her visit to discover this. Where were the workers– forest officials, all this time? Let her visit more forest reserves to see more.

  5. Zambia’s circus government. What does Vera Chiluba know about environmental issues?

  6. At last the former first lady has spoken. I just hope she understands what she is talking about.

  13. Charcoal burning will always be there. School people on afforestation instead.

  14. If pipo are encoaching on Forest Reserves in Kafue then there is much pressure why cant GRZ degazette it. Charcoal burning will be on the increase as a result of Zesco electricity hikes. Its survival for those who are involved.

  15. Let the people encroach on this land. If Mswati got free land why shouldn’t Zambians?
