The local authorities in Mufumbwe district in Northwestern province has engaged various local stakeholders in resource mobilization for reconstruction of the recently burnt down district police station.
District council chairperson, Elijah Munyompe and district commissioner, Masela Sekeseke have held consultative meetings with chiefs representatives, civil servants, councilors and the business community to come up with means to supplement government efforts on the reconstruction of the police station.
ZANIS reports that in an interview in Mufumbwe District today, Mr. Munyompe revealed that the stakeholders have resolved to offer support in various forms such as money contributions, building materials, labour and transport and other logistics towards the project.
“As head of the council, I will be in charge of all councilors and the district commissioner will be in charge of all heads of departments in the district while the chiefs will ensure that their subjects support the initiative through their headmen,” Mr Munyompe explained.
And Ms Sekeseke has thanked the various stakeholders for their pledges to have the police station reconstructed as soon as possible.
She expressed confidence that police officers will again have a place to operate from normally in less three months.
“With this overwhelming response we have received, I am confident that by January 2018, we shall have finished building the station,” Ms Sekeseke said.
And some Mufumbwe residents interviewed have strongly condemned the people who burnt down the police station.
65 years old Jimmy Kaunda said the burning down of the police station has taken the development of the district backwards adding that government is spending a lot of money on developing rural districts like Mufumbwe.
Tommy Chiteule, 43 also supported the concerns saying it is a shameful act that has tarnished the image of the district, while a 16 year old grade 11 female pupil who asked not to be named at Mufumbwe day secondary school expressed fears that there will be an increase in rape cases as wrong doers will take advantage of the disrupted police operations in the district.
Mufumbwe police station was burnt down on 14th October 2017 by some residents after a misunderstanding with police officers over a traditional ritual commonly known as ‘Chikondo.’
Interesting that the opposition is quiet of such reckless behavior by citizens. Silence is consent so I will assume the opposition (you know who) are happy over what happened in Mufumbwe.

I was on a bus which passed through Mufumbwe, the day after this riot. Zanis was also there. Why is there no mention that what angered these People was the fact that they were stopped from conducting ichikondo, as a form of Justice, in the way they understand it. A grade 11 school girl who was pregnant was operated on as a ceserean case. No Baby was found inside and the female organ turned into that of a male. Do you expect any reasonable parent to sit idle. Of course I do not support anarchy. Due to lack of Civic Education, they dealt with the issue in the way they thought was right, though wrong. This calls for research and is a case study. I do not remember during the UNZA Riots, even after burning cars and some rooms, which is also Unza property, seeing any student being Jailed. Let…
Let us be fair in our Judgement. Let us not prejudice anyone just because they are Villagers. Besides they are first offenders and just need to be educated on the consequences of the Law. I also heard on the bus about some past issue where someone was illtreated in the Police Cells. It appears that the situation has already polarised the people against some officers. This should also be looked into.
Was the fire caused by UPND? It is the only party that burns down buildings.
